The Mark Kennedy story just confirms what we knew all along

No Wealth But Life (repost) | 16-01-2011 21:09 | Other Press | Repression | Sheffield

Nearly two years on from the furore over the G20 protests, what many long suspected has finally been confirmed: the police are infiltrating the climate movement. Most of what I'd want to say about the unfolding saga of undercover cop Mark Kennedy is summed up by this very good piece in the New Internationalist, written by Danny Chivers, one of the defendants at the Ratcliffe trial. But, as someone who spent a lot of time in my old job trying to highlight the police's unacceptable attitude to the environmental movement, here for what it's worth is my two pence...

John Pilger's on the War on WikiLeaks and his Interview with Julian Assange

John Pilger | 15-01-2011 10:51 | Analysis | Other Press | Repression | Sheffield | World

The attacks on WikiLeaks and its founder, Julian Assange, are a response to an information revolution that threatens old power orders in politics and journalism. The incitement to murder trumpeted by public figures in the United States, together with attempts by the Obama administration to corrupt the law and send Assange to a hell-hole prison for the rest of his life, are the reactions of a rapacious system exposed as never before.

Mark Kennedy: secret policeman's sideline as corporate spy

Solidarity Sid | 12-01-2011 22:48 | Other Press | Repression | Sheffield

I know its bad form to just repost from the liberal press but they finally seem to have revealed something usefull.
Hopefully this will put paid to any of the “going native” shit that was stirred up by the newsnight piece.
The second half of this actually contains some investigative journalism (though as always they got their leads from here)

Wikileaks: Play the ball, not the man – and check who’s kicking it

Julie Webb-Pullman | 21-12-2010 10:12 | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

With few exceptions the majority of the public, but more worryingly, many supposed investigative and/or independent journalists, have dismally failed to exercise even the most minimum capacity for critical assessment, either talking-up the revelations (many of which were already common knowledge, or should have been to journalists doing their job properly) and/or participating in the indecent stampede to lionise Assange as some great champion of freedom of information and open government - or both.

UG#528 - The Bilderberg Group (Conspiracies and The Fiction of Government Power)

Robin Upton | 11-12-2010 22:38 | Analysis | Other Press | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

Audio
This week we took a look at the Bilderberg Group, a secret meeting of about 120 hierarchs from Europe and US. Senior members of national governments, multi-national companies, royal families, media corporations and financial institutions have met up annually since its inception in 1954. Little is known of the contents of their meetings, due to strictly enforced privacy - which may finally be weakening, as more leaks are emerging. We hear a range of voices this week, including Tony Gosling and Michael Parenti as well as Daniel Estulin's speech on the Bilderberg group given this year to the European parliament.

Wikileaks and media disinformation: North Korea, Iran and Belarus

Gearóid Ó Colmáin | 08-12-2010 22:12 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Sheffield | World

Much is being written in the mainstream press about the internet whistle-blowing website Wikileaks. But the interpretation and significance of those Wikileaks stories disseminated throughout the corporate media must be subjected to careful and critical analysis.

There is little that is particularly shocking about the recent Wikileaks. What is striking about many of the latest leaks is their conformity to the lies and disinformation regularly diffused by the mainstream media.

The upshot of this is that, while exposés of American war crimes should damage America’s imperial ambitions, other ‘leaks’ could actually serve the opposite purpose, especially when they are uncritically reported as ‘revelations’. In this article we are going to look at two examples of how Wikileaks stories could be used to further a US imperialist agenda.

Mysterious "laptop documents". Using fake intelligence to justify war on Iran

Michel Chossudovsky | 27-11-2010 19:37 | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Other Press | Sheffield | World

The US stance in the UN Security Council, has in part based on alleged intelligence documents which provide "evidence" of Iran's nuclear weapons program.

A recent article by investigative reporter Gareth Porter confirms unequivocally that the mysterious laptop documents are fake.

We are dealing with a clear case of fake intelligence comparable to that presented by Colin Powell in February 2003 on Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction. The fake intelligence presented to the UN Security Council was used as a justification for the March 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Will the US antiwar movement confront Washington's plans to wage a pre-emptive nuclear war against Iran based on fake intelligence?

Wikileaks: UK issues DA-Notice as US briefs allies on fresh leak

Index on Censorship (repost) | 27-11-2010 09:24 | Other Press | Repression | Technology | Sheffield

Governments, organisations and media across the world have been put on alert as whistleblowing site Wikileaks looks set to release millions of diplomantic communications. Emily Butselaar reports

As Wikileaks prepares to expose [1] a huge cache of classified diplomatic communications, the US has warned allies that new revelations may lead to public embarrassment. The cables are expected to expose sensitive foreign policy issues including corruption allegations against foreign governments and leaders, and clandestine US support for terrorism. The leak is expected to contain seven times more data than the infamous Iraq War Diaries released earlier this year.

President Gul: NATO missile plan is in line with our expectations

dandelion salad | 25-11-2010 14:05 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Sheffield | World

Obama, Gul, Papandreou and Cameron, NATO Summit, Lisbon, 19 November 2010
Ever since the November 2008 US Presidential elections, Turkey’s political establishment has been pretending to have an anti-imperialist stance against the threat of a possible war against Iran.

Actually, the signing of NATO’s new Strategic Concept by Turkey and all the other members of NATO at the November 2010 Lisbon Summit was the clearest indication of Turkey’s total capitulation to NATO and Israeli war plans against Iran.

An interview with a "Lebanese Christian" about Hezbollah-Christian relations

The Saker | 20-10-2010 13:41 | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

supporters of the Hezbollah-Aoun alliance
Today it is my real pleasure to submit to you the text of a Q&A I have had with "Lebanese Christian". One of the most misunderstood aspects of the socio-political reality of Lebanon is the fact that Hezbollah is very open to Christians as long as they are real Lebanese patriots and not proxies for Israel and the USA. I asked "Lebanese Christian" to comment on some of the aspects of the relationship between Christians and Hezbollah and he kindly agreed to reply to my question, for which I am deeply grateful to him.

Chilean miners rescued after ten-week ordeal

Patrick Martin | 17-10-2010 00:27 | Other Press | Workers' Movements | Sheffield

The successful rescue of 33 Chilean miners, buried under tons of rock and rubble for nearly ten weeks, was a cause of celebration in the mining centers of Caldera and Copiapo, throughout Chile, and around the world, particularly in mining regions where workers and their families face the same dangers every day as their Chilean brothers.

New York Times defends US government's right "to assassinate anyone it pleases"

Patrick Martin | 16-10-2010 17:52 | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Repression | Sheffield | World

In its main editorial Sunday, the New York Times, the major voice of what passes for liberalism in America, openly defends the right of the US government to assassinate anyone it pleases.

The open reactionaries like the Wall Street Journal and Fox News display their bloodlust unashamedly. The “liberals” like the Times prefer a dose of hypocritical moralizing and legalistic quibbling. The consequences for humanity are the same.
