Two infosec blunders that betrayed the Russian spy ring

Chris Williams | 06-07-2010 19:47 | Other Press | Technology | Sheffield

Everyone is having fun this week speculating on all aspects of the alleged Russian spy ring busted in the US on Monday. How were they initially detected? Are they just a decoy to hide the real spies? Why did the US go public now? Has anyone got any more pictures of Anna Chapman for the front pages?

Saville Inquiry continues cover-up of Bloody Sunday massacre

Chris Marsden | 18-06-2010 13:59 | History | Other Press | Repression | Sheffield | World

British troops during the occupation of Northern Ireland
The Saville Report into Bloody Sunday in Londonderry, Northern Ireland, on January 30, 1972, maintains the cover-up of one of the most infamous massacres ever perpetrated by British imperialism.

Even after the passage of 38 years, the truth—that the murder of 14 unarmed civil rights protesters was carried out under orders from the Conservative government of Edward Heath and the army top brass—is denied.

CRUSHING ECONOMICS, CHEERLEADING MEDIA AND A LOFTY DISMISSAL FROM THE SUNDAY TIMES

An essential role of corporate journalism is to shore up public confidence in an unjust, crisis-riven financial and economic system. Although plenty of gloom and doom is permitted, especially in the face of obvious crisis, the legitimacy of the system is rarely questioned.

The Digital Economy - state control of the internet

AF | 16-06-2010 17:10 | Other Press | Technology | Sheffield

The digital economy act is an important step in reining in the availability of information. A pivotal moment, just like the printing press was. The question is, will we defend what we have, or will we let it slip away into the never ending pit of commoditization?

Headshot - Propaganda, State Religion and the Attack on the Gaza Peace Flotilla

Medialens | 12-06-2010 11:06 | University Occupations for Gaza | Other Press | Palestine | Sheffield | World

As discussed in Part 1,  http://sheffield.indymedia.org.uk/2010/06/453210.html media coverage of the non-violent Iranian capture of 15 British sailors (in Iranian waters) focused on the humiliating failure of the sailors to open fire in self-defence. Journalists took a very different view of the May 31 Israeli attack on the ship Mavi Marmara carrying human rights activists and supplies to the besieged population of Gaza.

Headshot - Propaganda, State Religion and the Attack on the Gaza Peace Flotilla - Part 1

MediaLens | 09-06-2010 12:19 | Flotilla to Gaza | Other Press | Palestine | Sheffield | World

The most potent propaganda relies on language loaded with hidden implications. In a recent speech, journalist Robert Fisk noted:

“When we westerners find that ‘our’ enemies - al-Qaeda, for example, or the Taliban - have set off more bombs and staged more attacks than usual, we call it ‘a spike in violence’. Ah yes, a ‘spike’!

“A ‘spike’ in violence, ladies and gentlemen is a word first used, according to my files, by a brigadier general in the Baghdad Green Zone in 2004. Yet now we use that phrase, we extemporise on it, we relay it on the air as our phrase.”

Climategate' Investigation Clears UK Scientists Of Most Serious Claims

"The House of Commons' Science and Technology Committee said that they'd seen no evidence to support charges that the University of East Anglia's Climatic Research Unit or its director, Phil Jones, had tampered with data or perverted the peer review to exaggerate the threat of global warming – two of the most serious criticisms levied against the climatologist and his colleagues."

When Facts and Propaganda Collide - The BBC and Israel

medialens | 23-03-2010 15:19 | Analysis | Other Press | Palestine | Sheffield | World

When a Thai kibbutz worker was killed in Israel by a rocket launched from Gaza last week, BBC News online gave the incident headline coverage flagged up on its home page. (BBC news online, ‘Rocket fire from Gaza kills man in southern Israel’, 23:42 GMT, Thursday, 18 March 2010)

By contrast, the killing of two Palestinian teenagers, Mohammad Qadus and Osaid Qadus, by Israeli soldiers on Saturday was buried at the end of a short news report on UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon's Middle East visit. Even worse, the BBC’s footnote simply echoed Israeli propaganda that “no live bullets were fired, only tear gas and rubber bullets”, despite ample evidence to the contrary. (BBC news online, ‘UN chief says Gaza suffering under Israeli blockade’, 11:26 GMT, Sunday, 21 March 2010)

In what is likely to be the first of many such atrocities, two US military rockets slammed into a house near Marjah, the target of the current offensive, killing 12 people. US military authorities admitted that the victims were innocent civilians sheltering in their own home, as they had been advised to do by US and NATO officials.

Just when it seemed that Republicans in America had a monopoly on Islamophobic hysteria, the Sunday Times prompted a torrent of similar hysteria in the UK by running an article in which an employee of Amnesty International — Gita Sahgal, head of the gender unit at the International Secretariat — criticized the organization that employed her for its association with former Guantánamo prisoner Moazzam Begg.

Congressional hearing reveals US intel agencies shielded Flight 253 bomber

Alex Lantier | 03-02-2010 12:59 | Other Press | Terror War | Sheffield | World

A January 27 hearing of the House Committee on Homeland Security established that US intelligence agencies stopped the State Department from revoking the US visa of Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab. The Nigerian student, whom US officials suspected of being affiliated with the Yemeni terrorist group Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, attempted to set off a bomb on Northwest Flight 253 into Detroit on Christmas Day. Revocation of Abdulmutallab’s visa would have prevented him from boarding the airplane.
