The President and I (a *must watch* interview of President Ahmadinejad)

The Saker | 28-09-2010 21:43 | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Other Press | Sheffield | World

Soraya Sepahpour-Ulrich interviews President Ahmadinejad
Today I am truly delighted to post a really unique item: a 50min interview of President Ahmadinejad conducted by somebody who actually understands the issues and who wants to discover what this man is really like.

So far, all the interviews given by President Ahmadinejad to US reporters have inevitable resulted in idiotic questions, outright hostility, petty accusations and outright nonsense.

Ahmadinejad’s UN 9-11 Speech

Gideon Polya | 27-09-2010 17:20 | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

President Ahmadinejad delivers his speech at UN General Assembly, 23 Sept. 2010
Top scientists and intelligence experts dispute the “official US version” of what happened on 9-11 and variously assert that people within the US Government did 9-11 (possibly with Israeli assistance).

President Ahmadinejad’s 9-11 speech at the UN merely advances 3 logical, testable, scientific hypotheses about 9-11 but has immediately elicited hysterical, egregiously dishonest, anti-science and anti-truth responses from Western leaders and Mainstream media.

The following text by Arash Norouzi first published by the Mossadegh Project and Global Research in January 2007 confirms that the alleged "Wiped Off the Map" statement by Iran's president was never made.

Ethical reflections on the 9/11 controversy: The responsibility of the media

Elizabeth Woodworth | 23-09-2010 13:31 | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

While it is recognized that through the use of meta-analysis and randomized controlled trials the standard of excellence in evidenced-based medicine (EBM) stands alone on a pinnacle, there is nonetheless an evidence-based methodology that can be applied across the board in other decision-making areas. Though research into the events of 9/11 has not yet attained the rigor achieved by EBM, it is still possible to rank the research in this field according to evidence-based principles. This article explains the principles, points to sources that exemplify them, and argues the ethical obligation of librarians and journalists to advance those sources.

Real versus fake crises: Concealing the risk of an all out nuclear war

Michel Chossudovsky | 17-09-2010 09:42 | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

We are living history but at the same time we are unable to comprehend the events which shape our future and which are currently unfolding in front of our very eyes.

The details of ongoing war preparations in relation to Iran have been withheld from the public eye.The media is involved in acts of camouflage.

The devastating impacts of a nuclear war are either trivialized or not mentioned. Meanwhile, public opinion has its eyes riveted on what might described as "fake crises".

The fear campaign underlying a fake crisis is intended to obfuscate the real crisis --including the danger of nuclear war-- as well as disarm all forms of meaningful resistance and opposition.

Robert Stevens | 10-09-2010 07:55 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Sheffield | World

The opening round of talks between Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas has made it clear that Washington’s real aim is to legitimise the support of the Arab states for a future military onslaught against Iran.

UG#515 - War on Iran, Again? (And is Wikileaks a "modified limited hangout"?)

Robin Upton | 04-09-2010 03:34 | History | Other Press | Sheffield | World

Audio
As the corporate media starts to spew forth anti-Iran propaganda, the alternative media are full of reports about the coming attack on Iran. This week in our first hour Webster Tarpley discusses why he expects war with Iran, and why he thinks Wikileaks is not what it appears to be. In our second hour, Stephen Kinzer gives a history of the first coup d'état ever organised by the CIA. "Operation Ajax", motivated by the desire to regain control of the nation's huge oil revenues, ousted Iran's elected prime minister, Mohammad Mosaddegh, plunging the country into 25 years of US-backed bloody dictatorship.

Obama’s Iraq speech: An exercise in cowardice and deceit

Bill Van Auken | 01-09-2010 18:29 | Anti-militarism | Iraq | Other Press | Sheffield | World

Obama delivers a primetime TV address marking the end of combat mission in Iraq
President Barack Obama’s nationally televised speech from the White House Oval Office Tuesday night was an exercise in cowardice and deceit. It was deceitful to the people of the United States and the entire world in its characterization of the criminal war against Iraq. And it was cowardly in its groveling before the American military.

The address could inspire only disgust and contempt among those who viewed it. Obama, who owed his presidency in large measure to the mass antiwar sentiment of the American people, used the speech to glorify the war that he had mistakenly been seen to oppose.

Wikileaks’ CIA release -- say what?

Michael Collins | 01-09-2010 16:16 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Sheffield | World

"The CIA Red Cell memorandum" was released by the WikiLeaks
Wikileaks offered its first release since the controversial distribution of documents related to the United States effort in Afghanistan.

The current leak was posted to their web site on August 25. It is titled CIA Red Cell Memorandum on United States “exporting terrorism,” 2 Feb 2010.

The leak describes Red Cell as a CIA unit created by the director to develop “out-of-the-box” analysis offering “alternative viewpoints” on key intelligence issues.

This document doesn’t disappoint in being out-of-the-box.

How does poking fun at Iranian culture helps America lube the wheels of war?

Ali Gharib | 24-08-2010 22:14 | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Other Press | Sheffield | World

n the modern era, humor has worked again and again to dehumanize target countries as a standard part of war propaganda. In a democracy, where support of the population at large is supposedly a prerequisite for attacking another country, jokes are a common means of dehumanizing, demonizing and generally placing the population of the targets of the attack into the category of Other. Empathy plummets; and civilians in the aggressor state find it increasingly difficult to put themselves in the (Islam-approved) shoes of those on the receiving ends of the bombs. Most troubling is that liberals and progressives – those you might expect, ostensibly, to oppose a U.S. attack on Iran – are just as likely to laugh the country to war as hawks.

Israel will attack Iran: Will Israel attack Iran?!

Kourosh Ziabari | 21-08-2010 09:44 | Anti-militarism | History | Other Press | Sheffield | World

The Atlantic, September 2010
Over the past five years, Iran has been recurrently under the threat of an imminent war which the mainstream media have overwhelmingly talked of; a war against Tehran to overthrow the Islamic Republic and bring to power a "democratic" regime which the "international community" favors. The psychological warfare machinery is being activated again as each newspaper and website represents one arsenal. Jeffrey Goldberg is taking steps to become the Judith Miller of war against Iran and the world once again watches the funny advertisement of human rights by those who are terrifically massacring "humans" in Palestine, Iraq and Afghanistan, getting prepared for a new bloodshed in Iran.

Afghanistan casualty rate highest of war

James Cogan | 26-07-2010 23:24 | Afghanistan | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Terror War | Sheffield | World

Eight months after the Obama administration announced a “surge” of 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan to crush the Taliban-led insurgency, the rate of US and allied casualties has soared to the highest level of the nearly nine-year war and is beginning to match the bloodiest stages of the occupation of Iraq.

Local authorities face devastating cuts and rationalisation

Stephen Alexander | 24-07-2010 19:48 | Other Press | Workers' Movements | Sheffield

A report by the New Local Government Network (NLGN) has warned that local authorities could lose at least a third of central government funding over the life of the current parliament. It warns that the £1.165 billion cuts to local authority grants already announced by Chancellor George Osborne will be small “compared with the tsunami of funding cuts that will hit councils.”

BBC = Bin and Bypass Complaints

Media Lens | 08-07-2010 22:36 | Other Press | Sheffield | World

So Piss Off!

Robert Fisk wrote last week in the Independent of how an unnamed friend of his, "a Very Senior Correspondent of the BBC", responded to a recent challenge. Fisk could no longer recall whether it "was about the BBC's grovelling coverage of Israel or its refusal to show a film seeking help for wounded Palestinian children after the 2008-09 Gaza slaughter (on the grounds that this would damage the BBC's 'neutrality')". But the BBC correspondent was blandly dismissive:

"I recognise this is an issue."

Housing Benefit changes will increase social misery

Dennis Moore | 06-07-2010 19:56 | Other Press | Social Struggles | Sheffield

Housing Benefit reforms by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition will lead to an increase in homelessness. The proposals outlined could potentially affect over one million households in the UK currently in receipt of the Local Housing Allowance. Local Housing Allowance (LHA) calculates the Housing Benefit payable to tenants who rent their home from a private landlord.
