13 arrested at Rio Tinto-Alcan smelter blockade

Erik Bauxitebasher | 25-07-2007 01:01 | Anti-militarism | Climate Chaos | Repression | London | Sheffield | World

ICELAND: Today about 20 protesters climbed cranes and blocked access to the Rio Tinto-Alcan smelter in Hafnarfjordur. 13 were arrested and one is still being held hostage by the police in Reykjavik. Saving Iceland has organized a 'summer of dissent' as a part of a campaign against the war-mongering aluminum industry and their subservient pets in Government. Beyond protesting against the devastating exploitation of Iceland's rivers and wilderness for cheap energy, the network is linked to groups with the same corporate enemies in Brazil, Trinidad, South Africa, and India. The struggle continues with Iceland's second Critical Mass this Friday.

The Stroom Restaurant in Leeds have now confirmed that they have removed foie gras from the menu and have provided copies of the updated menu to relevant sources. This now only leaves 2 hotels in one of the UK's largest cities selling the delicacy of despair. Please politely contact Thorpe Park Hotel and Haleys to complain about their support for animal abuse. Thorpe Park's sister hotel, the Solent, recently gave foie gras the boot following pressure.

Fascist America, in 10 easy steps

Hawkeye | 24-04-2007 23:29 | Analysis | Repression | Terror War | Sheffield | World

It's not fascism when we do it...
On the internet people have been pointing out that the USA (and the UK not that far behind) is sliding into fascism, but this isn't something that the mainstream media will touch, after all they are a part of the problem. The following article by Naomi Wolf, published in the Guardian today is an exception to this and although reposts from the mainstream are rightly frowned upon here this article does deserve being an exception to the rule.

It is interesting to contrast the following article with the view of the USA that some on the UK left have, for example Mark Osbourn of the AWL considers that John Pilger has a "pathological hatred of the western powers which leads to the repeated and idiotic allusion that the US/UK leaders bear a similarity to Nazis":  http://www.workersliberty.org/node/8239 The article by John Pilger that Mark Osbourn is refering to can be read here:  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2007/02/361472.html

On March 25th he will travel to Berlin to sign the 50 page agreement , Declaration on the future of Europe, without even consulting the people of the UK. Far from a simple "declaration", this a binding treaty which embodies "basic laws" for 490 million people in 27 countries
