From The Back Of The Bus To Prison

Stewart A. Alexander | 15-01-2007 20:11 | Repression | Social Struggles | Sheffield

When Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a White passenger on a city bus 51 years ago, it was the spark that brought about the American Civil Rights Movement; changing the lives for millions of Blacks. For a short while, in the mid 60’s and 70’s, Blacks made some social and racial gains, however today many Blacks are wasting away their lives in American prisons due to the unjust practice of the Three Strikes Laws.

Whose War on Whose Terror? Reclaiming Our Rights

Nafeez Ahmed | 09-12-2006 18:20 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Repression | Terror War | London | Sheffield

Yesterday, I was fortunate to have been one of the opening plenary speakers at the 'Reclaiming Our Rights' conference at the Human Rights and Social Justice Institute at the London Metropolitan University, organized mainly by the Campaign Against Criminalising Communities (CAMPACC). It was an excellent conference bringing together some of the leading dissident organizations involved in political activism against the anti-terror laws. Speakers included people like Craig Murray, former British Ambassador to Uzbekistan; Mark Thomas, political comedian and journalist; Gareth Pierce, leading human rights lawyer; Brian Haw, the permanent Parliament Square protestor; among many others.

deacon dave assaulted by settler

"Palestine-Support" | 26-11-2006 11:20 | Repression | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

18 Nov 06 Hebron Day

At 11.30 three of us went to the olive groves to protect the Palestinian
families living in isolated homes among the olive trees.

Two settlers came towards us from the Seyaj House yelling abuse at us “Fuck
Jesus. We killed Jesus and we’ll kill you too ! “ We began filming and kept
ourselves between them and the Palestinian homes. They tried to enter Hani’s
house where we knew there was a number of small children and two women. We
refused to let them up the path and they headed off up into the Abu Haikal
olive orchard. We contacted other Human Rights Workers (HRW’s) to make sure
that there were people at the Abu Haikal house in case they made their way
there.

New terror warnings issued to justify policies of war and repression

wsws.org | 15-11-2006 10:47 | Analysis | Repression | Terror War | Sheffield

The overwhelming popular opposition to the Iraq war manifested in the US elections and the resulting weakening of the Bush administration have raised concerns in Britain’s ruling circles. There is fear that the anti-war and anti-Bush vote in America might become a catalyst for popular opposition in Britain to the crisis-ridden Blair government and its policies of war abroad and attacks on working class living standards and democratic rights at home.

Beatings and Sugar Plums: New Labour's War on the Kurds

Stuart Crosthwaite | 02-11-2006 16:17 | Analysis | Anti-racism | Migration | Repression | Sheffield | World

Early morning on September 5th security guards burst into the sleeping quarters of Colnbrook detention centre in west London. The guards had come to take thirty two Iraqi Kurdish men away. Barefoot, handcuffed, with the guards swearing at them, the thirty two were taken to RAF Brize Norton. Their threatened forced deportation to Arbil in northern Iraq was imminent. In response, one man slit his throat and up to fourteen others took overdoses or cut themselves in a desperate attempt to avoid "removal". One eye witness described the scene at the holding area at the airport as "carnage with blood on the walls".(1) The Kurds knew the danger of returning to Iraq. They had fled the country years before because of that danger.
