Antifascist Prisoners In Need Of Support

Leeds ABC | 02-07-2011 18:31 | Anti-racism | Repression | Sheffield | World

Six antifascists were recently fitted-up and sent to prison. Because of ongoing legal issues, for the moment we are unable to say more about their case, but a full report will eventually be issued. Suffice to say, they have been well and truly fucked over and deserve our fullest support and solidarity. Please write to them. As always, assume your letters are being read by our enemies and ensure you do not compromise your own security or that of others. Also please note that Thomas Blak and Austin Jackson are as yet unsentenced. For advice on writing to prisoners see the Leeds ABC website. La lucha continua!

FBI to Expand Domestic Surveillance Powers as Details Emerge of Its Spy Campaign Targeting Activists

Democracy Now! | 14-06-2011 18:15 | History | Repression | Sheffield | World

Audio

Civil liberties advocates are raising alarm over news the FBI is giving agents more leeway to conduct domestic surveillance. According to the New York Times, new guidelines will allow FBI agents to investigate people and organizations "proactively" without firm evidence for suspecting criminal activity. We speak to former FBI agent Mike German, who now works at the American Civil Liberties Union, and Texas activist Scott Crow, who has been the focus of intense FBI surveillance from 2001 until at least 2008. Using the Freedom of Information Act, Crow received 440 pages of heavily redacted documents revealing the FBI had set up a video camera outside his house, traced the license plates of cars parked in front of his home, recorded the arrival and departure of his guests, and observed gatherings that Crow attended at bookstores and cafes. The agency also tracked Crow’s emails and phone conversations and picked through his trash to identify his bank and mortgage companies. “It’s been definitely traumatizing at different points,” says Crow. “But if we don’t come out and be open about this, then they’ve already won, and the surveillance and the ‘war on terror’ wins against us.”

Government Orders You Tube To Censor Protest Videos

Paul Joseph Watson | 13-06-2011 23:31 | Repression | Technology | Sheffield | World

In a frightening example of how the state is tightening its grip around the
free Internet, it has emerged that You Tube is complying with thousands of
requests from governments to censor and remove videos that show protests and
other examples of citizens simply asserting their rights, while also
deleting search terms by government mandate.

John Pilger writes on 'the extraordinary banning of my film on war and media'

John Pilger | 11-06-2011 09:34 | Anti-militarism | Culture | Repression | Sheffield | World

Dear Noam

I am writing to you and a number of other friends mostly in the US to alert you to the extraordinary banning of my film on war and media, 'The War You Don't See', and the abrupt cancellation of a major event at the Lannan Foundation in Santa Fe in which David Barsamian and I were to discuss free speech, US foreign policy and censorship in the media.

America's appalling human rights record

Stephen Lendman | 21-05-2011 10:47 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Repression | Sheffield | World

Each year, the US State Department publishes human rights reports for over 190 countries. Its April 8-released 2010 China assessment can be accessed through the following link:

Unsparing in its harshness, it calls China "an authoritarian state in which the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) constitutionally is the paramount authority,"

Indeed, China's no model human rights champion. However, America's record is far worse at home and abroad, yet self-criticism is absent. Moreover, rarely do major media reports discuss abuses. Instead they regurgitate managed news, suppressing full and accurate disclosure of Washington's most deplorable human and civil rights record at home and abroad.

On April 10, two days after the State Department's report, China's Information Office of the State Council published its own comprehensive report titled, "The Human Rights Record of the United States in 2010,"

In its report, the US State Department charges were mostly without corroboration. In contrast, China, under six major headings, used data from the US Justice Department (DOJ), FBI, other US agencies, state ones, and think tanks, as well as international and US media reports. They reveal a far different America than official Washington and managed major media reports, concealing dark side truths important to reveal.

John Bowden – Scottish Prison Service Have Learned Nothing From The Stillman Aff

Leeds Anarchist Black Cross | 19-05-2011 14:32 | Repression | Sheffield | World

A few years ago the Scottish Prison Service used jail psychologist Matt Stillman to smear the Anarchist Black Cross as a “terrorist organisation” and use John Bowden’s contact with the ABC as an excuse for his continued detention. Subsequently, both Stillman and his lies were completely discredited. The Scottish Prison Service and the compliant psychologists they use as part of a package of prison repression have, it seems, learned very little from the affair, as John Bowden relates from Edinburgh Prison.

A Question of Sovereignty

Queen Elizabeth II is going to be called as a witness to a historic trial that is set to begin Monday, May 9th, 2011 in the Southwark Crown court at 10am.

This might postpone her scheduled and unprecedented trip to Ireland and should be of major interest to everyone in the U.K. and around the world.

Britain's Left Defeats Itself Again.

Watchitdie | 04-05-2011 14:06 | Indymedia | Repression | Birmingham | Liverpool | Sheffield

On November 30th 1999 thousands of anti-capitalist/globalisation activists gathered in Seattle, USA to protest against and successfully shut down a meeting of the World Trade Organisation (WTO). A large part of their grievance was that the WTO was effectively operating in secret with no reporting of the decisions it was making and the effect those decisions were having across the world. So by way of a solution a group of activists set up the Independent Media Centre or "Indymedia" for short. The idea was create a network of un-moderated, open publishing websites so people from all over the world could share news about the decisions being made in the name of globalisation and the actions that were being taken to protest against them. The Independent Media Centre was probably one of the most successful ideas to come out of the Seattle protests and there are now 180 Indymedia sites across the world in places as diverse as Japan, Israel, Kenya and Burma making Indymedia the blueprint for the sort of "Citizen Journalism" that's become so fashionable recently.
