UK Sought Rendition of British Nationals to Guantánamo; Tony Blair Directly Involved

Andy Worthington | 16-07-2010 14:17 | History | Repression | Terror War | Sheffield | World

With what the Guardian described yesterday as the "almost unprecedented" release of "security service reports of interviews with detainees in Guantánamo Bay and other overseas detention centres," the coalition government failed in its attempt to persuade the High Court to bring a temporary halt to a civil claim for damages filed by six former Guantánamo prisoners, unleashing, instead, a torrent of previously classified and deeply disturbing documents.

underclassrising.net | 15-07-2010 13:44 | Sheffield

COUNCILORS have reluctantly approved long-disputed plans for a large housing development on a former Sheffield University halls of residence site. Miller Homes’ plan to build 120 homes on the site of Tapton Hall, between the leafy suburbs of Broomhill and Crookes, was thrown out by Sheffield councillors when it was first submitted three years ago.

Chris | 14-07-2010 22:45 | Anti-racism | Gender | Migration | Sheffield

Audio

Odette Sefuko fled the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) via Uganda in fear of her life five years ago and came to England to claim asylum. The Home Office have rejected her claim, (now being reviewed by the European Court). The Home Office refuse to accept Odette is Congolese, despite reputable evidence (see below). They want to send her back to Uganda, a place where she might face imprisonment, torture or maybe death.

Melly | 14-07-2010 14:50 | Anti-racism | Migration | Social Struggles | Sheffield

The insiduously racist EDL have successfully used social networking site to hoodwink GMTV, distorting public opinion to make it appear that almost everybody in the United Kingdom wants a racist version of fashion police to patrol the streets harrassing the devout minority of Muslim who wear the religious facial garment.

Are You a "Perfect Citizen"? Big Brother Deploys Snooping Sensors on Private Networks

Tom Burghardt | 13-07-2010 13:41 | Technology | Terror War | Sheffield | World

Rather than addressing an impending social catastrophe, Western governments, which serve the interests of the economic elites, have installed a "Big Brother" police state with a mandate to confront and repress all forms of opposition and social dissent. -- Michel Chossudovsky and Andrew Gavin Marshall, Preface, The Global Economic Crisis: The Great Depression of the XXI Century, Montreal: Global Research, 2010, p. xx.

Leeds AF and the EDL

Makhno | 12-07-2010 13:11 | Anti-racism | Sheffield

Finally (not including the bumbling first attempt that was swiftly ‘hidden’ on Indymedia), at long last, Leeds AF have issued a statement about the incursion of 5 EDL members into a ‘militant antifascist’ meeting they held on July 3rd. Unfortunately, it raises more questions than it answers.

Report on the Antifascist Coalition Meeting on the 3rd of July 2010

Anarchist Federation Leeds | 10-07-2010 23:02 | Anti-racism | Sheffield

On Sat the 3rd Leeds Anarchist Federation called a meeting for an Antifascist Coalition in Leeds with the intention of discussing the EDL and ideas for how to respond to their plans to march in Bradford in August. The people attending the meeting were aware of the EDL’s intention to attack the meeting but decided to go ahead with it anyway. Preparations were made for this possibility with the intention to try to de-escalate first, as a fight in the Swarthmore Center was in no way what we wanted, and we were prepared for other eventualities should a de-escalation fail. However, this predicted attack never materialised.

BBC = Bin and Bypass Complaints

Media Lens | 08-07-2010 22:36 | Other Press | Sheffield | World

So Piss Off!

Robert Fisk wrote last week in the Independent of how an unnamed friend of his, "a Very Senior Correspondent of the BBC", responded to a recent challenge. Fisk could no longer recall whether it "was about the BBC's grovelling coverage of Israel or its refusal to show a film seeking help for wounded Palestinian children after the 2008-09 Gaza slaughter (on the grounds that this would damage the BBC's 'neutrality')". But the BBC correspondent was blandly dismissive:

"I recognise this is an issue."

Housing Benefit changes will increase social misery

Dennis Moore | 06-07-2010 19:56 | Other Press | Social Struggles | Sheffield

Housing Benefit reforms by the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition will lead to an increase in homelessness. The proposals outlined could potentially affect over one million households in the UK currently in receipt of the Local Housing Allowance. Local Housing Allowance (LHA) calculates the Housing Benefit payable to tenants who rent their home from a private landlord.

Two infosec blunders that betrayed the Russian spy ring

Chris Williams | 06-07-2010 19:47 | Other Press | Technology | Sheffield

Everyone is having fun this week speculating on all aspects of the alleged Russian spy ring busted in the US on Monday. How were they initially detected? Are they just a decoy to hide the real spies? Why did the US go public now? Has anyone got any more pictures of Anna Chapman for the front pages?
