Ongoing Open Cast Coal Mine Occupation, Derbyshire - update from court

Forward | 04-07-2008 17:16 | Climate Camp 2008 | Climate Chaos | Sheffield

No New Coal !
The first attempt to evict the occupiers of Bodge House on 30th June was a spectacular flop. The registered owner of the site is Harworth Mining International Limited. The outfit applying for a possession order are Harworth Estates (Agricultural Land -Trashing Of) Limited. OK, we added the "Trashing Of" bit to that otherwise bucolic title, but otherwise report what is alleged to be just a change of name yer honour. Their problem was they hadn't bothered to give the court any actual proof of this supposed change of name.

James Hansen's Appeal to the G8 on Climate Change

Chris | 04-07-2008 00:08 | G8 Japan 2008 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Sheffield | World

Later today James Hansen will address the the United Nations University, slides attached, and he has also written a letter to Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda of Japan, also attached, which contains the following dire warning, which, of course won't be heeded -- "business as usual at any cost" appears to be the motto the worlds "leaders" and this is what they intend to follow even if it leads to planetary death.

G8 and The War Against Torrentism

Tim Osman | 03-07-2008 19:05 | Analysis | Technology | Terror War | Sheffield

Today's news: Virgin Media are sending out letters advising people not to download content from peer-2-peer torrents.
Coming next: the G8 bring on the "Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement" (ACTA).
Could this be the end of the interwebs as we know it or the start of the real war on the G8?

2007 Ulley reservoir danger could have led to a "breakdown in social cohesion"

Chris | 30-06-2008 19:22 | Climate Chaos | History | Sheffield

Interesting article in the Independent today, "MI5: revealing areas at mercy of collapsing dams is a terror threat"  http://www.independent.co.uk/environment/climate-change/mi5-revealing-areas-at-mercy-of-collapsing-dams-is-a-terror-threat-854325.html

Some extracts follow, basically if the damn had burst last year Sheffield would have had no electricity for "an indefinite period" and also the "main 42-inch gas main serving Sheffield" would have been taken out.

Radio Ecoshock on James Hansen on Climate Criminals

Alex Smith | 29-06-2008 22:37 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Sheffield | World

Audio

NASA scientist James Hansen shakes up Capitol Hill (and the media) with explosive testimony to the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Climate Change. For one thing, he thinks oil industry executives who purposely (and secretly) fund groups to confuse the public about climate science – should be charged with crimes against humanity.

New secret U.S. effort to snitch on E.U.

Skynet | 28-06-2008 22:56 | Terror War | Sheffield | World

If a recent article in the New York Times is to be believed, the Bush regime are trying their damned hardest to get their mitts on the personal data of E.U. citizens. Ideally they want your secrets before Bush leaves office. That means your browsing habits and credit card records. The EFF are already onto it, are you?

Climate Change: The lost generation, and possibly much more

Lou Grinzo | 27-06-2008 10:05 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Sheffield | World

Read the article Rising seas threaten west Antarctic, and it’s all but impossible to think, yet again, of all the chances to take serious, desperately needed action on CO2 emissions that we’ve thrown away over the last twenty years. What could trigger such a bout of depressing navel staring?
