The police need help, but they're frightened to ask

reposter | 28-02-2009 18:25 | Indymedia Server Seizure | Repression | Technology | Sheffield | South Coast

The article below taken from the Torygraph demonstrates the justifications the police aim to use in order to back moves to give them full access to all digital communications and insist on full data retention. This obviously has relevance to the recent indymedia server seizure and the arrest that followed.

No Losar

crosteif | 27-02-2009 20:35 | Sheffield

The statement issued by the Central Tibetan Administration, the Tibetan government in exile, regarding the Tibetan new year reads as follows: "The CTA will hold only customary religious programs to mark Tibetan New Year, taking into consideration the continuing repression in Tibet and the ruthless crackdown last year (2008) which resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Tibetans and thousands imprisoned. We appeal to all the departments concerned and offices of the administration not to organize any lavish celebrations such as hosting feasts, dance parties and lighting firecrackers."

Sheffield University ignores student opinion regarding army recruiters!

Jack Daniels | 25-02-2009 18:44 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Education | Sheffield

Although there have apparently been discussions where several students have voiced their opinion supporting a ban of army recruiters from University campus, the University of Sheffield Careers Service could not care less. They have circulated an almost provoking email and have once more allowed army recruiters to hold interview sessions with students, which might even take place on campus.

Seumas Milne | 23-02-2009 11:28 | Analysis | Animal Liberation | Terror War | Sheffield

For most of the past century, Britain's secret state bugged, blacklisted and spied on leftists, trade unionists and peace campaigners, as well as Irish republicans and anyone else regarded as a "subversive" threat to the established order.

Waking the Dead

Hildy Johnson | 23-02-2009 09:55 | Sheffield | South Coast

According to the FT, the Government has decided to extend more credit to Northern Wreck as a way of propping up the falling housing market. The bank is also to be broken up into a good bank and a bad bank with taxpayers left to cover the losses on the toxic waste, whilst the private sector will no doubt be allowed to pick up the healthy part on the cheap.

Social Capital and the Obama Administration

Jason Mazzone | 22-02-2009 02:22 | Analysis | Culture | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

In the late 1990s, while he was a member of the Illinois Senate, Barack Obama was also a member of the Saguaro Seminar -- a brainstorming group organized by Robert Putnam on how to remedy the decline in social capital in the United States. Social capital refers to the collective value of social networks: when people are embedded in networks and can draw upon the norms of cooperation and reciprocity the networks embody there are a variety of measurable benefits both to them and to the community as a whole. These benefits can include more effective government, faster economic growth, improved health, and increased happiness.

BBC Covers Peak Oil: A Farm for the Future

Chris Vernon | 20-02-2009 18:14 | Ecology | Energy Crisis | Other Press | Sheffield | World

A Farm for the Future
Most would agree the subject of peak oil has not received the mainstream media coverage its importance warrants. On Friday the BBC will be broadcasting an excellent peak oil documentary; it focuses on farming. Presenter and co-producer Rebecca Hosking explores the importance of oil in farming and the potential impact of peak oil. The film has a passionate narrative centred on Rebecca’s small family farm in South West England; can she make her farm fit for the future?

On the morning of Friday February 13th Delshad Namiq Zorab was taken from his home in Doncaster to a police station and then to Campsfield IRC. Many of you will have met Delshad: he has been an active campaigner for the right to asylum. Now, locked in Campsfield IRC, he fears that he will be forcibly deported to Iraqi Kurdistan where he has every reason to believe that his life would be in real danger. This is despite the fact that his appeal for asylum is still pending: Delshad should not - even under this Government's asylum laws - be detained or deported.

Community hit by New Deal funding crisis

http://underclassrising.net/ | 19-02-2009 12:19 | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements | Sheffield

TO MAKE POVERTY HISTORY WE NEED TO MAKE THE MIDDLE CLASS HISTORY
A SHEFFIELD regeneration agency slammed for wasteful spending has almost run out of money two years early - leaving community projects with a sudden cash shortage and putting 120 jobs at risk. Burngreave New Deal for Communities has just £400,000 left of its £52 million Government-funded budget, supposed to last 10 years between 2001 and 2011.
