Whither Resilience and Transition? Why 'Peak Oil' Has Yet to Outlive its Usefulness

It's been a fascinating few days. Early in the week, Nate Hagens and Sharon Astyk were suggesting the perhaps the term 'peak oil' has outlived its usefulness, given that we have almost certainly peaked, and that the peak oil movement needs to shift its focus. It echoed something I wrote a while ago, likening ASPO and the wider peak oil movement to a Loch Ness Monster Society, dedicated to establishing the existence of this fabled creature. They organise conferences, scientific searches of the loch, write papers and journals, and then one day, an entire, intact Loch Ness Monster washes up on the shore. Then what? They have no reason to exist any longer, their whole raison d'etre vanishes overnight.

We will be leafletting at Sheffield train station (outside main entrance), from 4:30pm. The Vestas campaign have produced a broadsheet leaflet with details of their campaign, and we will also hold a collection to raise more funds for the campaign to continue.

However if they get enough hassle for chasing the contract then they won’t bother anymore, it also a great way to show them what they are in for if they do get the contract. The coal caravan is now in West Yorkshire and has visited Fairburn Ings which is threatened with open casting and Ferrbybridge power station which will burn the coal.

A3 is the best size for the Square Mile map, so for those without A3 printers, there are two A4 versions you can print out and stick together with old-fashioned sticky tape. The map is downloadable as a JPEG or PDF in A4, A3 and split A3 versions, in black and white or colour.
