LAON's 17th Press Release analyses what the effect of implementing the 2012 Energy Bill will be on the UK Surface Mine Coal Industry. The prognosis is that it faces medium to long term decline. As a consequence, over time, the strength of the current 'Need for Coal' arguments will slowly weaken. However, it may not come soon enough to prevent two new 9 and 10m tonne surface mines from being developed, one in Scotland and the other in Wales.

As Coal Use Declines Why Make It Easier to Dig It Out

The Loose Anti Opencast Network is calling on the Government to align Planning Policy with Energy Policy after discovering that it is the Government's intention to phase out the use of coal for power generation purposes, leading to a 75% decline in the use of coal for such a purpose over the next 10 years. At the same time, through provisions in the Growth and Infrastructure Bill it is possibly making it easier to dig the coal out!

West Burton gas power station in Nottinghamshire has been occupied and shut down by 16 No Dash for Gas activists who intend to stay on top of two of the chimneys for as long as their supplies allow.

Up the chimney
Early Monday morning around 30 activists shut down West Burton power station before climbing the chimneys to set up camp and occupy the flues in order to prevent it being switched on again. This action is to highlight the senselessness of a dash for gas in light of climate change and fuel poverty.

Community Share Offer for Sheffield Green Hydro Project Gets the Go-ahead

Renewable energy from hydro-electric power on the River Don came a step closer with the announcement this week of the launch of the campaign to raise finance for the scheme at Blackburn Meadows on the Sheffield/Rotherham border. Community energy group Sheffield Renewables is launching a Community Share offer to raise the £250,000 needed to begin construction of the Archimedean screw development in 2013. Supporters of the scheme will be asked to invest £250 per share and it is hoped to raise the funds in three months with the rest of the finance being made available through commercial loans.
