"United Against Nuclear Iran": America's war propaganda mouthpiece

Kourosh Ziabari | 20-09-2010 11:30 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Sheffield | World

United Against Nuclear Iran billboard ad in Peoria, Illinois, USA.
Those who regularly follow the developments of Iran might have come across to the website of "United Against Nuclear Iran", a "non-partisan, non-profit advocacy organization" that seeks to "prevent Iran from fulfilling its ambition to become a regional super-power possessing nuclear weapons"

UANI has compiled an elaborate list of the foreign companies and firms which do business with Iran and calls on its readers and visitors to send condemnatory letters and complaints to these companies so as to persuade them to withdraw their capitals and resources from Iran and stop doing business with a country which the United States and its European allies consider to be an emerging nuclear threat in the Middle East.

In a nutshell, UANI's objective is to impair the Iranian nation. They already know that Iran does not seek nuclear weapons. UANI's seeks a weak, demoralized and unstable Iran without an active role in the international community. UANI is not United Against Nuclear Iran, it is United Against the Nation of Iran.

Real versus fake crises: Concealing the risk of an all out nuclear war

Michel Chossudovsky | 17-09-2010 09:42 | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

We are living history but at the same time we are unable to comprehend the events which shape our future and which are currently unfolding in front of our very eyes.

The details of ongoing war preparations in relation to Iran have been withheld from the public eye.The media is involved in acts of camouflage.

The devastating impacts of a nuclear war are either trivialized or not mentioned. Meanwhile, public opinion has its eyes riveted on what might described as "fake crises".

The fear campaign underlying a fake crisis is intended to obfuscate the real crisis --including the danger of nuclear war-- as well as disarm all forms of meaningful resistance and opposition.

Why we love to hate conspiracy theories: 9/11 Truth as threat to intelligentsia

Denis G. Rancourt | 15-09-2010 11:48 | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

Especially left and liberal professionals and service intellectuals but also right-wing members of the intelligentsia vehemently attack and ridicule “conspiracy theories” such as the present 911 Truth movement.

Why? It’s as though power did not covertly orchestrate its predation of us? Is that not the modus operandi of power?

US and its allies should look at their own nuclearpolicy before criticizing Iran

Mersiha Gadzo | 15-09-2010 07:42 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Sheffield | World

US nuclear weapons in Europe
For years, the United States and its allies have accused Iran of being a major nuclear threat because it has violated the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Ironically, the real violators of the NNPT are the same nations accusing Iran. The U.S. and its allies have never been able to confirm their accusations with concrete proof since they are based entirely on suspicion. While the media continues to attack Iran, illegal nuclear activities made by the West remain widely unknown to the public.

9/11 Truth and "Global War on Terror": Pretext to wage war is totally fabricated

Michel Chossudovsky | 14-09-2010 12:54 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

"The New Middle East"
In the wake of 9/11, the (real) antiwar movement was completely isolated. Trade unions and civil society organizations had swallowed the media lies and government propaganda. They had accepted a war of retribution against Afghanistan on humanitarian grounds, an impoverished country of 30 million people.

Concurrently, a fake anti-war activism emerged in the wake of 9/11 which broadly consisted in stating: "I am against the war but I support the war on terrorism". Meanwhile, several NGOs became actively involved in humanitarian projects in Afghanistan, in close liaison with USAID and the Pentagon.

This acceptance of the "war on terrorism" was in large part based on the acceptance of the official 9/11 narrative, namely that the US was under attack, that the 9/11 attacks were perpetrated by Muslims, that the Taliban were protecting Al Qaeda and providing refuge to its illusive leader Osama bin Laden.

Ironically, many "Progressives" in America not only accepted the official 9/11 narrative, they were also involved in smearing the 9/11 Truth Movement. By slurring those who questioned the official 9/11 story (backed by carefully researched evidence and analysis), they (unwittingly) provided legitimacy to the bombing and invasion of Afghanistan, Iraq, the Palestinian occupied territories as well as the targeting of Iran, as part of the "Global War on Terror" GWOT).

9/11 and America’s secret terror campaign

Andrew Gavin Marshall | 11-09-2010 13:37 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

Given our historical understanding of al-Qaeda as a “database” of intelligence assets, which were recruited to fight the Afghan-Soviet war, and our more recent understanding of the relationships between the U.S. and other Western intelligence agencies historically and presently to these groups and individuals, does it not seem plausible that the operation of al-Qaeda as a covert branch of U.S. policy has continued?

Certainly, more research needs to be undertaken, but what is clear is that any and all official investigations thus far have been nothing but concocted lies: that is, willful and intended deception, designed to hide the truth, not reveal it.

It is also within this context, of understanding the deep nexus of intelligence and terrorism in international relations and imperial stratagems (that is, strategic deception), that we must view the rise, role, evolution and purpose of the “Global War on Terror,” now in its 9th year, spending trillions to send poor Americans to kill poor Muslims in nations across the Middle East, Africa, and Central and South Asia.

Flying the flag, faking the news

John Pilger | 10-09-2010 12:12 | Anti-militarism | Iraq | Terror War | Sheffield | World

In his latest column for the New Statesman, John Pilger traces the history of propaganda to Edward Bernays, the American nephew of Sigmund Freud, who invented the term "public relations". Bernays believed in "engineering public consent" and creating "false realties" as news. Here are examples of how this works today.

Mideast talks a cover for US war preparations

Robert Stevens | 10-09-2010 07:55 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Sheffield | World

Netanyahu, Clinbton and Abbas met in Washington D.C. on 2 September 2010

Who pays for the loss of life in Iran?

Kourosh Ziabari | 09-09-2010 20:23 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Sheffield | World

Since the victory of Iran's Islamic Revolution in 1979 which toppled the U.S.-backed regime of Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, Iran has been facing with devastating and agonizing financial sanctions of the United States and its European allies. The most inequitable and unreasonable sanctions against Iran were those which would were endorsed in 1995 and disallowed the aviation companies around the world to sell aircrafts and repair parts to the Iranian airlines directly. Iran has experienced several deadly air accidents in which hundreds of innocent civilians lost their lives. The United States has failed to dictate its political will to Iran and resorts to this failure as a pretext for punishing its people.

Pentagon's Half-Billion-Dollar PR Budget to Sell Afghan War

GRTV | 08-09-2010 18:45 | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Terror War | Sheffield | World

Video
$547 million. That’s the Pentagon’s P.R. budget. They’re using it to spread mistruths and misplaced hope in ‘progress’ with one goal in mind: to extend the brutal, costly Afghanistan War.

General Petraeus' media blitz is only the tip of the iceberg in the Pentagon's effort to sell war to the American people. The Defense Department has a budget of more than $500 million for public relations efforts directed at U.S. citizens, a slice of a much larger information operations effort to influence public opinion. But no matter how much they spend on P.R. and information operations, the facts on the ground show that the Afghanistan War isn't making us safer, and it's not worth the costs.

Join us as we fight back against the spin.

Imperial anatomy of Al-Qaeda:CIA’s drug-running terrorists & the “Arc of Crisis”

Andrew Gavin Marshall | 08-09-2010 08:33 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | History | Sheffield | World

The authors of the Project for the New American Century
As the 9th anniversary of 9/11 nears, and the war on terror continues to be waged and grows in ferocity and geography, it seems all the more imperative to return to the events of that fateful September morning and re-examine the reasons for war and the nature of the stated culprit, Al-Qaeda.

The British military in Iraq : A legacy of war crimes and atrocities

Felicity Arbuthnot | 03-09-2010 20:24 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Sheffield | World

Tony "I would do it again" Blair, announced, on 16th August, he is to give his entire £4.6 million advance on his book: "My Journey", to the Royal British Legion, for support of British soldiers in need. As the ungracious calls for his "journey" to be to The Hague get louder - with some suggesting a far less civilized ordeal - it seems timely to assess British "achievements" in Iraq.

"More than half the population either dead, wounded, traumatized, in prison, internally displaced, or in foreign exile ... The air, soil, water, blood and genes drenched with depleted uranium ... the most awful birth defects ... unexploded cluster bombs lie in wait for children to pick them up ... a river of blood runs alongside the Euphrates and Tigris ... through a country that may never be put back together again."

US author: I've come to appreciate Iran

Phil Wilayto | 02-09-2010 12:59 | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

Women Against War's billboard displayed in Albany, New York (April-June 2008)
What my first trip to Iran in 2007 taught me is this: From the school children to the police officers to the college students to laborers to the Revolutionary Guard, no one in Iran obviously has been taught to hate Americans and no one was preparing the Iranian people to go to war with Americans. If the government is teaching children to hate Americans, some of that would pick up; but it wasn't like that at all. I got mobbed in Shiraz by 80 elementary school children -- surrounding me so I couldn't move, yelling, "We love you; we love America, Welcome." Just because they found that we were American.

9/11 Truth - The worldwide “BuildingWhat?” Campaign

Building What? | 02-09-2010 10:02 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

BBC reported the collapse of Building 7 of the WTC before it actually occured!
“Recognizing the high correlation between those who know about the collapse of WTC 7 and those who believe that a new – or rather real – 9/11 investigation is needed, I propose that the international 9/11 Truth Movement initiate, starting this September, a world-wide, year-long ‘BuildingWhat?’ campaign. Through this campaign, we would seek to make the fact of its collapse so widely known that the mention of Building 7 would never again evoke the question: ‘Building What?’ ” –David Ray Griffin

Obama’s Iraq speech: An exercise in cowardice and deceit

Bill Van Auken | 01-09-2010 18:29 | Anti-militarism | Iraq | Other Press | Sheffield | World

Obama delivers a primetime TV address marking the end of combat mission in Iraq
President Barack Obama’s nationally televised speech from the White House Oval Office Tuesday night was an exercise in cowardice and deceit. It was deceitful to the people of the United States and the entire world in its characterization of the criminal war against Iraq. And it was cowardly in its groveling before the American military.

The address could inspire only disgust and contempt among those who viewed it. Obama, who owed his presidency in large measure to the mass antiwar sentiment of the American people, used the speech to glorify the war that he had mistakenly been seen to oppose.

Wikileaks’ CIA release -- say what?

Michael Collins | 01-09-2010 16:16 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Sheffield | World

"The CIA Red Cell memorandum" was released by the WikiLeaks
Wikileaks offered its first release since the controversial distribution of documents related to the United States effort in Afghanistan.

The current leak was posted to their web site on August 25. It is titled CIA Red Cell Memorandum on United States “exporting terrorism,” 2 Feb 2010.

The leak describes Red Cell as a CIA unit created by the director to develop “out-of-the-box” analysis offering “alternative viewpoints” on key intelligence issues.

This document doesn’t disappoint in being out-of-the-box.

Afghanistan: NATO's ten-year war in South Asia

Rick Rozoff | 01-09-2010 15:58 | Afghanistan | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | Sheffield | World

member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) - March 2006
In slightly over a month, on October 7, the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan will enter its tenth year.

The conflict represents the longest continuous combat operations in the history of the United States and Afghanistan alike. With the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for the only time in its existence activating its Article 5 mutual military assistance clause in September 2001 and thus entering the Afghan fray, European nations that had not been at war since the Second World War are now engaged in an endless combat mission.

There are 150,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan, 120,000 of them under the command of NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Military personnel from over a quarter of the 192 members of the United Nations. They include soldiers from almost every European country, several Asia-Pacific states, and nations in the Americas and the Middle East.
