Fabian Frenzel | 22-02-2006 11:33 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Sheffield

Pappe was invited by the Sheffield Palestine Solidarity campaign to talk about "Israel in the post-Sharon era". Around 50 people heard an eloquent speaker describing what he called the "Charade of Peace", a strategy of the Israeli political elite since beginning of the peace process in 1993 to talk peace but mean ongoing occupation and neglecting of Palestinian rights to self-determination, refugee return and state-hood.

Spectacular Terrorism and the Terror of the Spectacle

* | 26-09-2005 01:53 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Culture | Terror War | Birmingham | Cambridge | Sheffield | South Coast

“Such a perfect democracy constructs its own inconceivable foe, terrorism. Its wish is to be judged by its enemies rather than by its results. The story of terrorism is written by the state and it is therefore highly instructive. The spectators must certainly never know everything about terrorism, but they must always know enough to convince them that, compared with terrorism, everything else must be acceptable, or in any case more rational and democratic” (Guy Debord, Comments on the Society of the Spectacle).

freethepeeps | 18-09-2005 16:36 | Anti-militarism | Education | Social Struggles | Liverpool | Sheffield

On Monday 26th September, the trial of the George Fox 6 commences at Lancaster Magistrates Court. Six student activists face charges in a three day arising out of an action that took place at Lancaster University in September 2004 where protestors had gone into the George Fox building at the university to hand out leaflets and talk to people at the "Corporate Venturing" Conference - a networking meeting for multinational corporations. Speakers at the conference were drawn from controversial arms manufacturer BAE Systems, Shell and other companies the six say have 'long histories of human rights abuses and environmental destruction'. Police attended and told the protestors they were doing nothing wrong, but some months later they received summonses through the post. The defendants are seeking support at the trial.
