The Stew of Corruption

Craig Murray | 10-11-2010 13:34 | Public sector cuts | Sheffield

British democracy has lost its meaning. The political and economic system has come to serve the interests of a tiny elite, vastly wealthier than the run of the population, operating through corporate control. The state itself exists to serve the interests of these corporations, guided by a political class largely devoid of ideological belief and preoccupied with building their own careers and securing their own finances.

Racism, Religion, and the American and UK Armed Forces Decision to use DU

Roddy Newman | 10-11-2010 13:11 | Health | History | Terror War | Sheffield | World

Racism, Religion, and the American and UK Armed Forces Decision to use Uranium Munitions in their Wars in Iraq, the Balkans, and Afghanistan

While there has been much debate about the wars in Iraq, the Balkans, and
Afghanistan, the most important aspect of those conflicts, the clearly
racist, and religiously motivated decision by the American and UK armed
forces to use depleted uranium, and non-depleted uranium munitions which
have irradiated those 3 mostly Muslim, or large minority Muslim places with
enough inhalable radioactive material to kill millions of people, is rarely
mentioned in the major media, which ought to regard the nuclear wars that
the American and UK armed forces have fought over the last 19 years, as the
biggest scandal of modern times, because there is concrete scientific proof
that those wars could kill more civilians than the Holocaust, as I will now
explain.

UG#523 - Ivan Illich & The Collapse of Power

Robin Upton | 10-11-2010 03:46 | Analysis | Social Struggles | Sheffield | South Coast

Audio
This week we take a look at that enigmatic modern prophet, Ivan Illich. His writings covered a wide range of areas, from health to technology to economics to church history and way beyond. Robert Hutchinson will give a quick biographical sketch and introduce some of his radical strands of thought, before we focus on a single major prophesy, the sudden collapse of social power, its revelation as a fiction. We link this to the confidence based backing of centralised currency and hear from Marshall Rosenberg, George Draffan and others on related fictions which people internalise as a response to hierarchy.

Medialens: WikiLeaks - The Smear and the Denial - Part 2 - The Denial

Medialens | 09-11-2010 23:17 | Iraq | Repression | Terror War | Sheffield | World

The UK and US media smears described in Part 1  http://sheffield.indymedia.org.uk/2010/11/467342.html should be kept in mind when considering the gravity and importance of the latest WikiLeaks. In addition to thousands of previously unreported civilian killings, the leaks revealed more than 1,300 claims of torture by Iraqi police and military between 2005 and 2009. More than 180,000 people were detained at some point between 2004 and 2009, or one in 50 Iraqi males.

This week we continue looking at the toxic nature of the human separation from nature; we bring you 3 different pieces about the human engineering of toxic chemicals. First, an adaptation of Adam Curtis' BBC documentary Goodbye Mrs. Ant, on the rise and fall of the pesticide industry as purveyors of miracle cures, and how discovery of the pernicious effects of DDT lead to the growth of ecology and the environmentalist movement. Secondly, a 2009 interview with about the world's most fatal industrial chemical leak, the 1984 disaster in which a pesticide factory exploded in Bhopal. Finally, an interview with Emanuelle Schick-Garcia about her film, The Idiot Cycle, on how multinational chemical companies are both the world's biggest produce carcinogens and are intimately connected with the cancer treatment industry.

Fake anti-war activism. The “humanitarian road” towards an all out nuclear war?

Michel Chossudovsky | 06-11-2010 19:04 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

Pentagon's Nuclear Posture Review Report, April 2010
While the danger of an all out war on Iran is a matter of concern, it is by no means a priority for the US, Canadian and European antiwar movements. In the US, there are very few antiwar events focussing on US-Israeli threats directed against Iran. Many in the antiwar movement, while condemning the US, continue to believe that Iran constitutes a threat and that the solution is "regime change". The funding of NGOs (which are constituent members of major antiwar collectives) by corporate tax exempt charities and foundations, has also contributed to weakening the stance of antiwar activism in relation to Iran.

Support Needed For Huntingdon Lane Protest Camp!

Camper Against UK Coal | 04-11-2010 15:02 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Social Struggles | Birmingham | Sheffield

old photo for anti-police reasons!
The beginning of the month saw no let up from UK Coal and it's 10 million pounds worth of digging and earth moving equipment on site at Telfore/Huntingdon Lane protest camp, Shropshire. On site there are constant security guards, between each day and night, working as part of National Eviction Team, around the clock, ready to enforce the courts will and the corporate bidding at a moments notice. They have also errected a pathetic fence to mark the 'boundary', or rather, the bit of land they will forcibly move people off if you are caught wandering...A public footpath was closed by local authority law so that now not even 'random walkers' can see the devestation being caused to the wonderful wrekin landscape.
The footpath is also patrolled by security working as National Eviction Team.

Medialens: WikiLeaks - The Smear and the Denial - Part 1 - The Smear

Medialens | 03-11-2010 15:17 | Iraq | Repression | Terror War | Sheffield | World

“Journalists don't like WikiLeaks”, Hugo Rifkind notes in The Times, but “the people who comment online under articles do... Maybe you've noticed, and been wondering why. I certainly have.” (Hugo Rifkind Notebook, ‘Remind me. It's the red one I mustn't press, right?,’ The Times, October 26, 2010)

Rifkind is right. The internet has revealed a chasm separating the corporate media from readers and viewers. Previously, the divide was hidden by the simple fact that Rifkind’s journalists - described accurately by Peter Wilby as the “unskilled middle class” ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2007/dec/10/comment.pressandpublishing) - monopolised the means of mass communication. Dissent was restricted to a few lonely lines on the letter’s page, if that. Readers were free to vote with their notes and coins, of course. But in reality, when it comes to the mainstream media, the public has always been free to choose any colour it likes, so long as it’s corporate ‘black’. The internet is beginning to offer some brighter colours.
