White working class? Is that investigative journalism?

Paula Sharratt | 06-03-2008 21:41 | Analysis | Anti-racism | Globalisation | Sheffield

Most local and national journalism defaults to notions of an underclass of 'losers' without any analysis of how these 'losers' have been structurally excluded. The recent discovery of 'working class' and 'white' as a disadvantaged group is for purely cynical and sensationalist reasons.

Leeds street medic training, 28th-30th March

medic | 06-03-2008 13:28 | Anti-militarism | Health | Social Struggles | Sheffield

The UK Action Medics are running a 2 1/2 day street medic training in Leeds at the end of this month. This is a 20 hour course that will teach you the basics of general First Aid, as well as skills to deal with medical situations specific to direct action, such as dealing with chemical weapons and the police. The course will involve scenarios and hands-on practice and, although we cannot offer you any official accreditation, the 2 1/2 day training is the minimum standard for membership of the Action Medics, and will equip you for a wide range of situations, from hypothermia to baton wounds.

make the middle class history | 06-03-2008 08:18 | Sheffield | World

It has been mentioned Britain's love with extreme surveillance before (see this story
 http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-23391081-details/George+Orwell%2C+Big+Brother+is+watching+your+house/article.do
), which turns every citizen into a would-be criminal. If you decide to spend your vacation in London, say, you'll find it next to impossible to miss the ubiquitous surveillance cameras, installed, as the story goes, to prevent crime (an almost unprovable and thus politically very useful assertion). And indeed the cameras are extremely useful to identify suspects in those very crimes they didn't deter in the first place.

Beyond Hope and Doom: Time for a Peak Oil Pep Talk

Richard Heinberg | 03-03-2008 11:18 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Sheffield | World

Awareness of Peak Oil, Climate Change, impending global economic implosion, topsoil depletion, biodiversity collapse, and the thousand other dire threats crashing down upon us at the dawn of the new millennium constitutes an enormous psychological burden, one so onerous that most people (and institutions) respond with a battery of psychological defenses-mostly versions of denial and distraction-in an effort to keep conscious awareness comfortably distanced from stark reality. I discuss this in "the Psychology of Peak Oil and Climate Change," chapter 7 of Peak Everything, where I conclude that the healthiest response to dire knowledge is to do something practical and constructive in response, preferably in collaboration with others, both because the worst can probably still be avoided and because engaged action makes us feel better.

JSA Rights

Here follows a brief analysis of statistics produced by DWP on sanctions imposed on JSA claimants. These confirm what most people already know- that if you appeal to the independent tribunal you will most probably win. And if everybody appeals the sanctions system will collapse.

The End of the Welfare State in the UK?

SWAN | 21-02-2008 13:01 | Sheffield

The assault on benefits and welfare which generations have fought for is relentless, SWAN have provided a briefing/commentary which people can use, there is also a parliamentary Early Day Motion by John McDonnell MP which is worth getting behind, write to your M.P to support it.

Early Day Motion
EDM 877

POVERTY IN THE UK
05.02.2008

McDonnell, John

That this House notes the recent comments by the Government's welfare reforms adviser, David Freud, about those on incapacity benefits, by the newly appointed Work and Pensions Secretary of State on the unemployed and those on incapacity benefits and by the new Housing Minister on eligibility for council housing; further notes two recent reports by the Institute for Fiscal Studies and by the Fuel Poverty Advisory Group, which respectively show the UK income inequality to be at its highest levels since the late 1940s and that fuel poverty targets will be missed, which follows the failure of the Government to meet child poverty targets; and therefore calls upon Government Ministers to concentrate on attacking poverty rather than attacking the poor.
