Medialens | 03-12-2010 22:16 | Health | Palestine | Repression | Sheffield | World

On November 17, we sent out a media alert that highlighted the corporate media’s lack of interest in official documents revealing Israel’s deliberate policy of near-starvation for Gaza.

UG#525 - Cannabis (Medical Marijuana, Forgetting and the Botany of Desire)

Robin Upton | 28-11-2010 14:37 | Health | Social Struggles | Sheffield | South Coast

Audio
Last week's episode looked at how man made toxic chemicals have proved more destructive for humans than initially anticipated. This week, by contrast, we look at the effects of chemicals that occur naturally in plants, and may be more therapeutic than generally recognised. In our first hour, Claudia Little, a medical marijuana activist looks at some of the innumerable therapeutic uses of this plant, with a history of medical use going back several thousands of years. Our second hour features Michael Pollan speaking on the contents of his book Cannabis, Forgetting, and the Botany of Desire, which widens our focus to look at how plants have co-evolved to fulfil useful functions to other life forms.

Media Bury Documents Revealing Israel's Deliberate Policy of Near-Starvation for Gaza

Medialens | 17-11-2010 13:25 | Health | Palestine | Repression | Sheffield | World

Israel has been forced to reveal what Palestinians and other observers on the ground have known for a long time: that the blockade of Gaza is state policy intended to inflict collective punishment, not to bolster Israeli “security”.

Racism, Religion, and the American and UK Armed Forces Decision to use DU

Roddy Newman | 10-11-2010 13:11 | Health | History | Terror War | Sheffield | World

Racism, Religion, and the American and UK Armed Forces Decision to use Uranium Munitions in their Wars in Iraq, the Balkans, and Afghanistan

While there has been much debate about the wars in Iraq, the Balkans, and
Afghanistan, the most important aspect of those conflicts, the clearly
racist, and religiously motivated decision by the American and UK armed
forces to use depleted uranium, and non-depleted uranium munitions which
have irradiated those 3 mostly Muslim, or large minority Muslim places with
enough inhalable radioactive material to kill millions of people, is rarely
mentioned in the major media, which ought to regard the nuclear wars that
the American and UK armed forces have fought over the last 19 years, as the
biggest scandal of modern times, because there is concrete scientific proof
that those wars could kill more civilians than the Holocaust, as I will now
explain.

UG#516 - The Politics & Economics of Food (Promoting Famine & Creating Sickness)

Robin Upton | 13-09-2010 06:34 | Bio-technology | Health | Sheffield | World

Audio

This week's show looks at food, focussing specifically on the US food system. In our first hour, we hear from Michael Pollan, author of In Defense of Food. He speaks of the economic pressures that promote energy intensive agribusiness and the growing backlash and grassroots opposition. He casts doubt on the modern, reductionist approach to understanding food, remarking that "in matters of food, so far, culture, historically has been a more reliable guide to what to eat than science." In our second hour, we hear from Raj Patel, author of "Stuffed and Starved", on "The Hidden Battle for the World Food System".

Beyond Hiroshima - The Non-Reporting of Fallujah's Cancer Catastrophe

Media Lens | 07-09-2010 14:00 | Health | Iraq | Terror War | Sheffield

Compassion is sometimes a central theme of media reporting. On August 25, journalists across the UK described how a British woman, Mary Bale, had been filmed dropping a cat into a wheelie bin. The cat was later released unharmed. The Guardian reported and commented on the story on August 24 and 25. Matt Seaton wrote:

“OK, there are lots of acts of random cruelty involving humans on humans every day, but this was somebody's pet, for Pete's sake. Who would do such a thing?” ( http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2010/aug/24/coventry-cat-wheelie-bin)

Scientists predict more deadly heat waves. Now they have found the upper limit our bodies tolerate - and we'll get there without stopping our emissions. The "skeptical scientist", John Cook, and Stuart Staniford, the technical investigator, talk it through. From Chicago to Europe's deadly 2003 heat wave to cooking our grandkids.

NHS Blood and Transplant | 28-01-2010 13:02 | Health | Sheffield | World

An NHS roadshow takes to the streets of Sheffield this week to call on people to prove their support for organ donation and join the NHS Organ Donor Register (ODR). The travelling roadshow is part of a UK-wide campaign to close the gap between the number of people who say they’d be willing to accept an organ if they needed one – 96% - and those who have pledged to donate by joining the ODR, currently 27%.
