UG#515 - War on Iran, Again? (And is Wikileaks a "modified limited hangout"?)

Robin Upton | 04-09-2010 03:34 | History | Other Press | Sheffield | World

Audio
As the corporate media starts to spew forth anti-Iran propaganda, the alternative media are full of reports about the coming attack on Iran. This week in our first hour Webster Tarpley discusses why he expects war with Iran, and why he thinks Wikileaks is not what it appears to be. In our second hour, Stephen Kinzer gives a history of the first coup d'état ever organised by the CIA. "Operation Ajax", motivated by the desire to regain control of the nation's huge oil revenues, ousted Iran's elected prime minister, Mohammad Mosaddegh, plunging the country into 25 years of US-backed bloody dictatorship.

The British military in Iraq : A legacy of war crimes and atrocities

Felicity Arbuthnot | 03-09-2010 20:24 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Sheffield | World

Tony "I would do it again" Blair, announced, on 16th August, he is to give his entire £4.6 million advance on his book: "My Journey", to the Royal British Legion, for support of British soldiers in need. As the ungracious calls for his "journey" to be to The Hague get louder - with some suggesting a far less civilized ordeal - it seems timely to assess British "achievements" in Iraq.

"More than half the population either dead, wounded, traumatized, in prison, internally displaced, or in foreign exile ... The air, soil, water, blood and genes drenched with depleted uranium ... the most awful birth defects ... unexploded cluster bombs lie in wait for children to pick them up ... a river of blood runs alongside the Euphrates and Tigris ... through a country that may never be put back together again."

US author: I've come to appreciate Iran

Phil Wilayto | 02-09-2010 12:59 | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

Women Against War's billboard displayed in Albany, New York (April-June 2008)
What my first trip to Iran in 2007 taught me is this: From the school children to the police officers to the college students to laborers to the Revolutionary Guard, no one in Iran obviously has been taught to hate Americans and no one was preparing the Iranian people to go to war with Americans. If the government is teaching children to hate Americans, some of that would pick up; but it wasn't like that at all. I got mobbed in Shiraz by 80 elementary school children -- surrounding me so I couldn't move, yelling, "We love you; we love America, Welcome." Just because they found that we were American.

9/11 Truth - The worldwide “BuildingWhat?” Campaign

Building What? | 02-09-2010 10:02 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

BBC reported the collapse of Building 7 of the WTC before it actually occured!
“Recognizing the high correlation between those who know about the collapse of WTC 7 and those who believe that a new – or rather real – 9/11 investigation is needed, I propose that the international 9/11 Truth Movement initiate, starting this September, a world-wide, year-long ‘BuildingWhat?’ campaign. Through this campaign, we would seek to make the fact of its collapse so widely known that the mention of Building 7 would never again evoke the question: ‘Building What?’ ” –David Ray Griffin

Obama’s Iraq speech: An exercise in cowardice and deceit

Bill Van Auken | 01-09-2010 18:29 | Anti-militarism | Iraq | Other Press | Sheffield | World

Obama delivers a primetime TV address marking the end of combat mission in Iraq
President Barack Obama’s nationally televised speech from the White House Oval Office Tuesday night was an exercise in cowardice and deceit. It was deceitful to the people of the United States and the entire world in its characterization of the criminal war against Iraq. And it was cowardly in its groveling before the American military.

The address could inspire only disgust and contempt among those who viewed it. Obama, who owed his presidency in large measure to the mass antiwar sentiment of the American people, used the speech to glorify the war that he had mistakenly been seen to oppose.

Wikileaks’ CIA release -- say what?

Michael Collins | 01-09-2010 16:16 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Sheffield | World

"The CIA Red Cell memorandum" was released by the WikiLeaks
Wikileaks offered its first release since the controversial distribution of documents related to the United States effort in Afghanistan.

The current leak was posted to their web site on August 25. It is titled CIA Red Cell Memorandum on United States “exporting terrorism,” 2 Feb 2010.

The leak describes Red Cell as a CIA unit created by the director to develop “out-of-the-box” analysis offering “alternative viewpoints” on key intelligence issues.

This document doesn’t disappoint in being out-of-the-box.

Afghanistan: NATO's ten-year war in South Asia

Rick Rozoff | 01-09-2010 15:58 | Afghanistan | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | Sheffield | World

member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) - March 2006
In slightly over a month, on October 7, the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan will enter its tenth year.

The conflict represents the longest continuous combat operations in the history of the United States and Afghanistan alike. With the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for the only time in its existence activating its Article 5 mutual military assistance clause in September 2001 and thus entering the Afghan fray, European nations that had not been at war since the Second World War are now engaged in an endless combat mission.

There are 150,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan, 120,000 of them under the command of NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Military personnel from over a quarter of the 192 members of the United Nations. They include soldiers from almost every European country, several Asia-Pacific states, and nations in the Americas and the Middle East.

“Sacred” Ground Zero

Margaret Kimberley | 31-08-2010 18:26 | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | History | Sheffield | World

If American whites practiced what many of them preach to Muslims, they would ban themselves from building cultural institutions of any kind in much of the United States, since so many places are sites of depraved atrocities and mass killings of people of color by whites. Or, are only white folks’ “sensitivities” to be respected? Where is “hallowed ground” for descendants of Black slaves and Native Americans?

Report calls for “infiltration” of 9/11 sites

Annie | 29-08-2010 20:30 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

A new report released by a think tank called Demos warns of the hazardous effects of conspiracy theories on society and recommends strategies for governments to mitigate these effects, including the infiltration of websites.

The report, called The Power of Unreason: Conspiracy Theories, Extremism and Counterterrorism, says "most notoriously and influentially, the ‘9/11 truth movement’ has questioned the official accounts of 9/11 and has become a large and growing political force."

The report notes that the 9/11 truth movement is "peaceful", but makes no distinction between the legitimate questioning of the official account of 9/11 and any number of unrelated, and often racist, conspiracy theories.

UG#514 - Virtual Reality & the Fragmentation of Modern Consciousness

Robin Upton | 28-08-2010 10:00 | Technology | Sheffield | World

Audio
Computer technology promises to be make work ever more efficient. But efficient at what? And why? If technology is saving people time, why do they seem to have so little left for what matters? The first hour features a presentation from last month by Nicholas Carr, author of "Is The Internet Making Us Stupid?", introduced by an essay from Steve Talbott, "Multitasking Ourselves to Death". We conclude with a few minutes of history from the great techno-sceptic, Ivan Illich, followed by a speech from Heather Menzies, author of "No Time, Stress, and the Crisis of Modern Life".

A Class Act: the story of a hunt sab

Louise, West Yorkshire Hunt Sabs. | 25-08-2010 07:49 | Animal Liberation | Sheffield

My first encounter with hunting was way back in my teens, working as a barmaid at a snooty silver service hotel. I took the Saturday morning shift, eager to fill my pockets with the extra £3.50 an hour. I remember it being fucking freezing, picking my way through the puddled car park wearing stupidly high heels, short skirt and a white blouse. Despite the drizzling rain I wasn’t allowed to keep my coat on, shivery arms holding up a tray of drinks to the young farmers on horseback. None of the ungrateful bastards said thank you.
