Zizek on Iranian protests

Nima Barazandeh | 25-06-2009 01:31 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Social Struggles | Sheffield

"The following is a guest post from Slavoj Žižek, Apparently the mainstream media has not shown interest in publishing it. The piece is copy-right free and you should feel free to republish this on your own blog. "

one would be expecting a miracle to expect Ahamdinejad apologists, who have been supporting his govornment based on illusioins that a middle class uprising is in place in Iran. Mind you Sepah, the main supporter of Ahmadinejad is a multi- million corporation. most people in the rural areas of Iran, who many in the left believe have voted for Ahmadinejad, are from ethnic minorities who would either, NOT vore, or should they come to the polls is to protests to the pro-regime candidate. Ahmadinejad govornment has the control of the Media, the Police, Riot police, funded by a multi million corporation (Sepaah e Paasdaaraan) and the new regime-dependant corporations and middle class. Open your eyes, only a tyranny who has acknowledged lack of legitimacy, would kill cruch demonstrations in such a scale , to save their position. Is the British left really that blind?

Doncaster’s New Mayor Supports Strike-Breaking:

underclassrising.net | 23-06-2009 07:54 | Sheffield

25 years ago Doncaster’s towns and villages were physically attacked by a Tory government hell-bent on destroying the unions and close-knit communities whose collective strength presented an obstacle to the greed-centred, Thatcherite/Neoliberal economic policy (the economic policy that led directly to today’s global recession). Thanks to the miners strike Doncaster remains one of the poorest regions in the UK.

A Party for the Poor (no not a fucking free drug infested one)

underclassrising.net | 21-06-2009 18:34 | Sheffield

Economic inequality in the UK is at the highest it has been since records began in 1961. The gap between the rich and the poor in Britain has almost reached a record level. 2.9 million children are currently living below the breadline. A child’s social class background at birth is still the best indicator of how well he or she will do in school and later on in life.

English Democrat and newly elected Mayor of Doncaster, Peter Davies – the man with the Welsh name who wants to reclaim Monmouthshire – has threatened to cut funding to the town’s annual Gay Pride event. He says…

“My policy on gays and lesbians is very simple. I don’t think councils should be spending money on them parading through town advertising their sexuality.”

The last weekend of July – the city of Sheffield will be filled with music

underclassrising.net | 17-06-2009 17:39 | Sheffield

This is what they say about themselves:

It was a simple idea which the musical godfathers of Sheffield took up with a passion. Matt Helders, Jon McClure and Toddla T – signed up immediately and got to work bullying the musical industry into supporting Sheffield – the music city. And so on the last weekend of July – the city of Sheffield will be filled with music. Every local band worth seeing – who isn’t on tour will be there. The curators musical friends and family will be putting on a show. And to top it all – with the generous support of the council and Hallam FM, there will even be a massive outdoor stage on Devonshire Green.

The BNP's success reflects the new racism of our political culture

Arun Kundnani | 12-06-2009 07:54 | Analysis | Anti-racism | Sheffield

underclassrising.net | 09-06-2009 09:04 | Sheffield

Sunday night’s European elections were certainly dramatic. It’s difficult to say which is more shocking: the election of 2 BNP members or the incredible collapse of the Labour vote. We think that people were expecting the Labour meltdown as the government has been lurching from crisis to crisis for months. The apparent “rise” of the BNP seems to have caused the most amazement.

How The Media Keep Us Angry, Ignorant And Afraid

Media Lens | 09-06-2009 00:33 | Analysis | Other Press | Terror War | Sheffield | World

Cartoon Korea - Filtered to Fit

How much do you know about the increased political tensions on the Korean peninsula? The answer, even for diligent readers of the mainstream press, is likely to be 'not much'. In place of serious, penetrating analysis the public has been sold a cartoon version of events based on a well-worn propaganda template. It is a tale spun by journalists who appear to know little of the real issues and who have internalised the key rules of 'balanced' reporting: do not point the finger of blame at your own government (or its allies), and do not question your government's demonisation of official enemies (learn nothing from the past).
