Sole military Super-Bloc: NATO Issues Daily Reprieves To The World

Rick Rozoff | 05-11-2011 00:34 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | Sheffield | World

A Stop NATO feature in August provided an, admittedly incomplete, list of nations that NATO, actuated by its first Strategic Concept for the 21st century adopted at the bloc’s summit in Lisbon last November and its initial implementation in Libya this year, could attack or otherwise intervene in next: Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Central African Republic, Chad, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cyprus, Ecuador, Eritrea, Iran, Lebanon, Madagascar, Mali, Moldova-Transdniester, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia, the South Caucasus (Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, South Ossetia), Sudan-South Sudan, Suriname, Syria, Uganda, Venezuela, Western Sahara, Yemen and Zimbabwe.

The time is ripe and in fact long overdue for issuing a call for an international anti-NATO initiative addressed to individuals, organizations, political parties and governments to convene an extraordinary session of the United Nations General Assembly to demand the disbanding of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as a – as the gravest – threat to world peace.

Focussing on Canada's Tar Sands this week, we examine the murky reality of 'free trade', and interference by the Canadian Government in the European Climate Change legislation. Who makes and enforces these agreements, and who benefits? We look at how the SPP is being revamped for re-introduction after concerted efforts to kill it by citizens' action groups.

UG#572 - Monopoly and Money (Contradictions of Capitalism)

Robin Upton | 21-10-2011 14:42 | Globalisation | Policing | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

Audio
If competition is such a good thing, why is it not tolerated in areas of government or law? Or in the money system, which functions as a highly profitable private business? And what about cartel agreements which align the interests of multi-national corporations firmly against the interests of consumers? Are corporations really competing to bring better products to market more cheaply, or are they competing for control of government to grant them privileges?

The post-9/11 decade of lies

Larry Chin | 08-09-2011 19:05 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | Sheffield | World

1st Sgt with Baker Company stationed in Iraq, September 2003
It has been and will be the same since the day it happened. The same exhausting exercise, whether one, five years, ten or fifty years since 9/11. Another orchestrated orgy of mass propaganda-stoked ignorance and “war on terrorism” hysteria.

The propaganda myth of 9/11, imbedded inextricably into the fibers of society and culture, and into the brain cells of naïve, willfully uninformed people, is back for another sickening “commemoration”.

Who chooses to “commemorate” the lie of 9/11? Undoubtedly, the high officials and elites who planned the event, who successfully achieved everything they wanted---unending war for oil, naked fascism and militarism, and economic conquest---from this ultimate false flag operation. The atrocity of 9/11, the desperate act of an empire facing extinction, was not an “intelligence failure”, but the greatest intelligence success and criminal operation in history.

To Avert A Bloodbath - Libya And The Press - Part 1

Media Lens | 01-09-2011 19:02 | Analysis | Globalisation | Terror War | Sheffield | World

From the allegedly liberal left to Murdoch’s hard right, the media spectrum continues to shine green for 'go' on the Libyan war. An Independent on Sunday (IoS) editorial on August 28 observes:

‘This newspaper supported Nato's military intervention, and Britain's part in it, when it began in March, but it was a choice between hard and complex options – and so it remains.’

Nine countries gather to create Latin American Union of News Agencies

ULAN | 06-06-2011 19:27 | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | Other Press | Sheffield | World

News agencies from Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay and Venezuela decided to join efforts to create the Latin American Union of News Agencies (ULAN, Spanish abbreviation), aimed at facing negative campaigns undertaken by communication monopolies from the United States and Europe.

“The main element for us is the possibility of building an information reference for the whole continent, capable of looking at the reality of the Latin American and Caribbean nations with our own eyes, not with the eyes of the North or Europe,” Fernandez said.

Reforming Our Understanding of Violence

Toufic Machnouk | 28-05-2011 09:46 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | Sheffield | World

Structural violence is the effect of a systemic imbalance in society that prefers the interests of some over others. Its dynamics are less visible than that of direct violence, where the causes are generally easier to identify. The use of direct violence is mostly a state affair manifested in armed conflict. The participation of the general population is predominantly one of inaction. Structural violence, however, tends to involve the participation of the general population which is both a cause for concern and optimism.

Libyan scenario for Syria: Towards a US-NATO "humanitarian intervention"?

Rick Rozoff | 02-05-2011 13:14 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | Sheffield | World

The Times, 23 April 2011
Britain, France, Germany and Portugal circulated a draft for a Resolution 1973-type initiative against Syria earlier in the week, failing which Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Spain later on the 27th demanded the Syrian ambassadors to their countries condemn their government's actions at home.

Synchronized with the U.S. action on the 29th, the European Union announced it plans to impose a wide range of sanctions against Syria including the now typical portfolio of travel bans, the freezing of assets and an arms embargo.

What is underway currently is the realization of the former George W. Bush administration's project for "regime change" in Syria of six years ago following the assassination of former prime minister Rafik Hariri in Lebanon and the subsequent Cedar Revolution - a term coined by then-U.S. Under Secretary of State for Global Affairs Paula Dobriansky - the withdrawal of Syrian troops from the country and the recall of the American ambassador from Damascus.

Britain’s royal wedding: A big day for the global oligarchy

Finian Cunningham | 29-04-2011 14:34 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | Sheffield | World

The British public – grinding under massive austerity budget cuts, unemployment, poverty wages, social deprivations and crumbling services – are thrown scraps of feelgood comfort from the much-hyped wedding between Prince William and his girlfriend Kate Middleton.

Meanwhile, the spectacles of gore and bloodlust – admittedly despite much public opposition – are located thousands of kilometers away in the Middle East, Iraq, Central Asia, Afghanistan, where over a million civilians have been killed in British-backed “wars against terror” that have yet to be sated even after eight and 10 years of butchery, respectively; and now the latest spectacle opens in North Africa, Libya, where over the past six weeks Royal Air Force warplanes have been bombing and killing civilians in the name of “peace” and “humanitarian concern”

From Ivory Coast to Libya and beyond: The conquest of Africa

Rick Rozoff | 10-04-2011 10:56 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | Sheffield | World

Just as the 1884-1885 Berlin Conference divided the African continent into spheres of influence between the major European powers and the U.S., with Ivory Coast belonging to France and Libya later taken by Italy, so now the U.S. and all the major former European colonial masters, who are now fellow NATO member states - France, Britain, Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Turkey - are again planning to establish dominance over what has become the world's second most populous continent.

Obama's Terror War on Libya

Stephen Lendman | 07-04-2011 21:11 | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Globalisation | Sheffield | World

The Guardian, 19 March 2011
Wars are solely for wealth and power, never humanitarian intervention to liberate oppressed people or promote democracy. They're notions, in fact, US leaders won't tolerate, notably Obama, doubling down on Bush, waging his Iraq and Afghan wars, fighting two others in Pakistan and Libya, another allied with Israel against Palestine, as well as proxy wars in Somalia, Central Africa, Yemen, Bahrain, Haiti, Honduras, Colombia, and at home against Muslims, Latino immigrants, and working Americans.

Libya: The destruction of a country. The bombing of civilian targets

An open letter by Russian doctors in Libya | 04-04-2011 00:00 | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

The account provided by the team of Russian Doctors constitutes an eyewitness account of what is happening on the ground in Libya. It contradicts the stream of media disinformation. It confirms that the coalition is routinely bombing civilian targets. For those progressives who have endorsed the US-NATO "humanitarian mandate", this account provides us with evidence of extensive war crimes by those you claim to be coming to the rescue of civilians. Residential buildings, hospital are being targeted by the coalition's smart bombs. The latter are extremely precise. The bombing of civilians is deliberate. These are so-called validated targets. they are part of a list of targets.
