How Alternative Media Provide the Crucial Critique of the Mainstream

Richard Keeble | 20-01-2010 14:28 | Analysis | Other Press | Sheffield | World

On January 4, Tim Luckhurst, former BBC journalist and current Professor of Journalism at the University of Kent, wrote an article in the Independent with the dramatic title, ‘Demise of news barons is just a Marxist fantasy.’ Luckhurst argued that leftist critics are gleefully predicting the end of corporate journalism:

“There will be no further need for newspapers or broadcasters to host debates and represent public opinion. The internet will let every citizen speak for themselves. The masses will seize the means of media production. We will witness an era of revolutionary change.” ( http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/opinion/tim-luckhurst-demise-of-news-barons-is-just-a-marxist-fantasy-1856668.html)

Only the extinction of capitalism will ensure the survival of our species

Hugo Blanco | 15-01-2010 22:50 | COP15 Climate Summit 2009 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

The concentration of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere is already so high that the climate system has been brought out of balance. The CO2 concentration and global temperatures have increased more rapidly in the last 50 years than ever before on Earth, and will rise even faster in the coming decades. This adds to a multitude of other serious ecological imbalances, the impacts of which threaten the lives and livelihoods of the people of the world, most acutely, impoverished people and other vulnerable groups.

Uncivilized - Paul Kingsnorth on Copenhagen & Decline

Alex Smith | 19-12-2009 22:42 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Sheffield

Audio
We ARE climate change, says deep green author & broadcaster Paul Kingsnorth, in this Radio Ecoshock interview. Copenhagen never had a chance - because the comfortable millions using fossil fuels aren't ready to give it up - until forced by a crumbling climate and economy. Revisioning a civilization on the edge, through The Dark Mountain Project.

Dancing on a Mass Grave - Oliver Kamm of The Times Smears Media Lens

Media Lens | 25-11-2009 22:19 | Analysis | Other Press | Sheffield | World

One of our most relentless critics is Oliver Kamm, leader writer and blogger at The Times. Kamm joined the paper in 2008 having been an investment banker and co-founder of a hedge fund. In a 2006 blog, Kamm described us as “a shrill group of malcontents”, an “aggressively simple-minded lobby” guilty of "unprofessional and often comically inept exegesis" whose approach “demeans public life”. An impressive claim to make about one writer living off donations, one writer working in his spare time after finishing full-time work, and a virtually unpaid webmaster. David Cromwell, Kamm added, is “an ignoramus”.

Monbiot on Peak Oil: If Nothing Else, Save Farming

Chris | 20-11-2009 14:29 | Analysis | Energy Crisis | Sheffield

George Monbiot's latest article on peak oil is introduced thus: "It’s probably too late to prepare for peak oil, but we can at least try to salvage food production."

Of course governments are doing nothing to transition to the production of food without fossil fuels -- what little is happening is coming from the grass roots, see for example the Soil Associations pages on community supported agriculture:

 http://www.soilassociation.org/Takeaction/Getinvolvedlocally/Communitysupportedagriculture/tabid/201/Default.aspx

The following article was published in the corporate media and the role that the tiny number of voices like that of George Monbiot play in the bigger picture is considered in the latest Medialens alert:

A Comparative Review of Flat Earth News and Newspeak
 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2009/11/442004.html

For more background on peak oil and food and what it means, essentially the end of industrial civizilation, listen to this talk by Nafeez Ahmed from last year:

Climate Change Denial and "Death Denial"

Chris | 05-11-2009 08:30 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Sheffield | World

Following is an article by George Monbiot on the rise of climate change denial which starkly contrasts this with the increasingly dire warnings from scientists about where we are heading, perhaps 4+°C by 2050. The denial has been stoked up by a massive disinformation campaign as the scientists at realclimate.org have documented. "Denial" and "maladaptive coping strategies" have also been recently considered in an article by Clive Hamilton, how to deal with climate change grief.

U.S. Peak Oil Conference Conflicted Amidst The Oil Recession

Jan Lundberg | 22-10-2009 20:31 | Analysis | Energy Crisis | Sheffield | World

Upon the first global recession influenced by the peaking of oil extraction and record high prices, the question for "peak oilers" arises: does peak oil and energy decline mean great profits for modernizing industry, or is peak oil the beginning of huge changes in lifestyle toward sustainability after societal collapse?

Climate Change Disinformation

Chris | 22-10-2009 19:43 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Sheffield | World

Regular readers of Indymedia will be well aware of the concerted disinformation campaigns that this site has been subjected to and which the site admins struggle to keep on top of. One of the issues which has been targeted with disinformation is climate change and with a few days to go before the 24th October 2009 International Day of Climate Action the following article on the matter of climate change disinformation from the scientists at realclimate.org is worth a read.

Arun Kundnani from the Institute of Race Relations (IRR) has this excellent comment  http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2009/oct/18/surveillance-prevent-muslim-extremism on the fiasco that has emerged relating to the government's Preventing Violent Extremism (PVE) funding programme due to the Guardian's recent spate of reporting on the issue  http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2009/oct/16/anti-terrorism-strategy-spies-innocents . Kundnani is the author of an IRR report based largely on interviews with officials involved in implementation of Prevent funding and policies.

Whither Resilience and Transition? Why 'Peak Oil' Has Yet to Outlive its Usefulness

Rob Hopkins | 12-10-2009 14:05 | Analysis | Climate Chaos | Energy Crisis | Sheffield

It's been a fascinating few days. Early in the week, Nate Hagens and Sharon Astyk were suggesting the perhaps the term 'peak oil' has outlived its usefulness, given that we have almost certainly peaked, and that the peak oil movement needs to shift its focus. It echoed something I wrote a while ago, likening ASPO and the wider peak oil movement to a Loch Ness Monster Society, dedicated to establishing the existence of this fabled creature. They organise conferences, scientific searches of the loch, write papers and journals, and then one day, an entire, intact Loch Ness Monster washes up on the shore. Then what? They have no reason to exist any longer, their whole raison d'etre vanishes overnight.

Global Power and Global Government

Andrew Gavin Marshall | 25-07-2009 00:59 | Analysis | Sheffield

Humanity is on the verge of entering into the most tumultuous period in our history. The prospects of a global depression, the likes of which have never been seen before; a truly global war, on a scale never before imagined; and societal collapse, for which nations of the world are building totalitarian police states to control populations; are increasing by the day. The major global trend forecasters are sounding the alarms on economic depression, war, a return to fascism and a total reorganization of society. Through crisis, we are seeing the reorganization of the global political economy, and the transformation of capitalism into a totalitarian capitalist world government. Capitalism has never stayed the same through its history; it has always changed and will continue to do so. Its changes are explained and analyzed through political-economic theory, both mainstream theory and critical. The changes are undertaken over years, decades and centuries. The next phase of capitalism is one in which the world moves to a state-controlled economic system, much like China, of totalitarian capitalism.
