BENEFIT CLAIMANTS ARE FACING MORE INTIMIDATION!

Community Socialist (Liverpool) | 20-02-2005 13:02 | Analysis | Repression | Social Struggles | Liverpool | Sheffield

Note the following article on Sheffield Indymedia:

 http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/regions/sheffield/2005/02/304633.html

The above article was the first time I've seen anything at all on this issue, there are many people here in Liverpool and elsewhere on social security benefits both in work and out of work, disabled, sick or retired. Many claimants have had the pressures put upon them, I for one have been getting letters pressuring me for months and months into accepting payment firstly into a Post Office (P.O.) card account.

Sheffield Social Forum open meeting report-back

Dan Aktivix | 19-02-2005 21:19 | G8 2005 | Analysis | Free Spaces | Sheffield

Sheffield Social Forum had its first ‘open meeting’ of 2005 on 17th February. This is a report back by one of the organisers, and some reflections on the social forum movement in 2005. This is just one person’s local point of view.

Jane Horton | 31-01-2005 17:53 | Analysis | Health | Sheffield

For the last year I have been unwell, so unwell that I have stopped working and have to spend much of the day horizontal. This has been difficult to come to terms with. When I was a child I read the Beano, and fantasised about being Billy Whizz...

4 Homes Blunkett

Mark Barnsley | 28-01-2005 13:42 | Analysis | Repression | Sheffield

After my piece 'Shed No Tears For Blunkett' was published on Sheffield Indymedia, one of Blunkett's cronies, who happens to be the councillor for Blunkett's Sheffield Brightside constituency, came (alone) to his defence. This went along the lines of 'You're all middle-class, not like me and my good working-class pal David', and part of this ludicrous argument was the supposed low-cost of the houses they both own in Sheffield. What Blunkett's pal forgets to mention is that Blunkett doesn't just have 1 home, but 4! And either Peter Price has been playing down the value of Blunkett's Sheffield house - or Blunkett has been on the fiddle again!

The power of social forums: 3000 words on why we should fight for them

Dan Aktivix | 23-12-2004 17:42 | Analysis | Free Spaces | Social Struggles | Sheffield

"Once the logic of power is adopted, the struggle against power is already lost… for what is at issue in the revolutionary transformation of the world is not /whose/ power but the very existence of power." [Holloway / Peláez]
-------

Throughout the ESF process, I kept on having this dark vision: the European Social Forum office in London as an encampment deep in the Congolese Jungle. Like the Heart of Darkness – Ken Livingstone a 21^st Century Kurtz. Picture him: lurking in shadow, brooding in the last rays of a blood red sunset, deep within his humid, plastic-plant-filled office. Picture him: at the end of a long, dark corridor lined with the heads of SWP members and GLA officials who displeased him…

Shed No Tears For Blunkett 1

Mark Barnsley | 16-12-2004 16:03 | Analysis | Repression | Liverpool | Sheffield

In the wake of Blunkett’s overdue resignation a picture is being painted, with himself as the primary artist, of ‘an honourable man brought low by love’. The career of this vain, arrogant, conceited individual was not brought to an end because of Blunkett’s private life, something he has done his utmost to deny the rest of us, but because he is a liar and corrupt, neither of which are new.

Council wardens - council spies ?

Billy Badger | 26-11-2004 11:50 | Analysis | Indymedia | Sheffield

Sheffield City Council sent two wardens round to my flat last week (Low Edges). They wanted to use my kitchen to carry out "observations" on another tenant they suspected of "benefit fraud". I said no. Three days later I got a letter from the council saying they'd received complaints of my "loud" television. Which is strange, as I don't own one. But...on the day the wardens came ... I had a TV box (empty) on my kitchen table. Mmm...

3 STEPS

gabriele zamparini | 15-11-2004 18:30 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Social Struggles | London | Sheffield

To initiate a war of aggression, therefore, is not only an international crime; it is the supreme international crime differing only from other war crimes in that it contains within itself the accumulated evil of the whole.
