No Widening M1

Sheffield No Widening M1 Group | 20-09-2005 23:16 | Ecology | Health | Sheffield

M1 motorway

The M1 carries huge volumes of traffic (some sections up to 160,000 vehicles per day). There is congestion at peak times. The widening is proposed to "reduce congestion and improve both safety and journey time reliability". But the plans are already flawed. When the proposals for the widening were originally agreed, it was noted that the only way to lock in the benefits would be to employ road-use charging. This has not been mentioned in the current documentation. In addition, independent research has shown that you can't build your way out of congestion, road widening and new roads simply encourage more traffic. The government's own studies confirm this. With traffic already predicted to increase by 50% by 2011, there is an urgent need for more long-term sustainable solutions rather than a road building programme that will further accelerate this increase.

Building Threat to Greenbelt Land near Sheffield

Kath | 20-08-2005 03:15 | Ecology | Free Spaces | Social Struggles | Sheffield

On the 18 May 2005, Rotherham Council agreed to sell land ........which will be used to provide an access road............ This was agreed without consulting users of this open space................A detailed planning application to build 600 houses, by Bryant Homes, is expected shortly. It is felt that the Council will have a conflict of interest when dealing with this application. Why does Rotherham want to enable building on this open countryside when it has a large number of brown field sites?

Earth First! is not a cohesive group or campaign, but a convenient banner to work under for people who share similar ideas. The general principles behind the name are non-hierarchical organisation and the use of direct action to stop, and eventually reverse, the forces that are responsible for the destruction of the earth and its inhabitants.

Since 1992 many of the people under this banner have come together at gatherings to meet, socialise, discuss and organise direct action. This year's gathering will take place in the Peak District. Here, in our first national park, is some of Britain's most spectacular landscape.

Councillors powerless in face of corporations?

Corporate Watch | 21-03-2005 00:05 | Ecology | Health | Sheffield

A re-post from www.corporatewatch.org.uk - about another incinerator being passed.

We're watching the incinerator extension being built, and we know its insidious health effects. We know there are waste and recycling alternatives, that the dioxins produced will be with us forever more, and that once in operation it needs feeding with waste - destroying any genuinely sustainable waste strategy.

Isn't it time we began to think about getting the thing stopped?

A few snaps from the over policed G8 protests in Derby on March 17th - when marches in the centre of town had been banned by the government and exclusion zones set up in the surrounding villages. 12 cyclists were arrested in the morning - has anyone got any pictures of this or the critical mass protest?
