Protecting civilians or western oil companies?

Wikileaks-released State Department cables from November 2007 and afterwards show the real reason for the mounting U.S. hostility to the Libyan government prior to the current civil war.

Prevent: A Totally Illiberal Strategy

Craig Murray | 08-06-2011 12:21 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Terror War | Sheffield | World

I have now ploughed through all 120 pages odd of the Government’s new Prevent Strategy, which manages to be even more illiberal and more turgid than the original. It claims that the last Prevent Strategy was misguided – but for all the wrong reasons. Rather amusingly, it starts with a message of endorsement from Lord Carlile – who also endorsed the last strategy which it criticises so strongly. The truth is, Carlile will endorse anything for any government which gives him status – he loves status – “It has my considered and strong support” he concludes his endorsement – you have to imagine saying it with marbles in your mouth and a degree of insufferable pomposity – “It has my considered and strong support”- wanker.

No End to the “War on Terror,” No End to Guantánamo

Andy Worthington | 14-05-2011 19:28 | Guantánamo | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Terror War | Sheffield | World

With the death of Osama bin Laden, there is a perfect opportunity for the Obama administration to bring to an end the decade-long “War on Terror” by withdrawing from Afghanistan and closing the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba.

Anti Arms-Traders 'breach' parameter for Heckler and Koch picket

Shut Down H + K | 10-05-2011 19:57 | Anti-militarism | Social Struggles | Terror War | Sheffield | South Coast

A nice photo opp!!
Every second Monday of the month the Shut Down H + K campaign in Nottingham hold a peaceful picket outside the Easter Park Industrial Estate, Nottingham, to highlight and protest the presence on the business estate of the international arms manufacturers and traders, Heckler and Koch. Heckler and Koch have been in the city for over five years and an arms manufacturer of varying degrees and under various names has been in the city for many decades. Protesters have always been around to highlight these scum and protest against them, as I'm sure many of us would expect.

US/Saudi Deal: You invade Bahrain. We take out Muammar Gaddafi in Libya.

Pepe Escobar | 06-04-2011 11:28 | Anti-militarism | Repression | Terror War | Sheffield | World

You invade Bahrain. We take out Muammar Gaddafi in Libya. This, in short, is the essence of a deal struck between the Barack Obama administration and the House of Saud. Two diplomatic sources at the United Nations independently confirmed that Washington, via Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, gave the go-ahead for Saudi Arabia to invade Bahrain and crush the pro-democracy movement in their neighbor in exchange for a "yes" vote by the Arab League for a no-fly zone over Libya - the main rationale that led to United Nations Security Council resolution 1973.

The agents of Washington and Britain within Libya’s opposition leadership

Julie Hyland | 03-04-2011 11:45 | Terror War | Sheffield | World

The Interim Transitional National Council (TNC) was not officially able to participate in the conference held on Libya at London’s Lancaster House on Tuesday due to differences within the war coalition over support for the anti-Gaddafi leadership. However, Washington and London made clear their backing for what is being groomed as Libya’s government-in-waiting—once, that is, the military onslaught against the country has achieved its desired objective of regime change.

US, France and Britain launch war of aggression against Libya

Patrick Martin | 21-03-2011 23:40 | Repression | Social Struggles | Terror War | Sheffield | World

The United States, France and Britain began air strikes and missile attacks on Libyan targets Saturday, initiating a war of aggression that threatens to destabilize North Africa and the entire Middle East. The first two days of bombing have already claimed many lives among the Libyan population that the imperialist powers falsely claim to be protecting.

The Guardian’s hatchet job on Julian Assange #WikiLeaks

Robert Stevens | 10-03-2011 20:22 | Iraq | Repression | Terror War | Sheffield | World

WikiLeaks: Inside Julian Assange’s War on Secrecy, by David Leigh and Luke Harding, published by the Guardian newspaper, is now being paraded as the “official” account of WikiLeaks and its founder Julian Assange. It is in reality a politically-motivated hatchet job aimed at discrediting Assange and facilitating his persecution by the Obama administration and its allies in the UK and Sweden.

How The So-Called Guardians Of Free Speech Are Silencing The Messenger

John Pilger | 10-03-2011 09:59 | Repression | Terror War | Sheffield | World

As the United States and Britain look for an excuse to invade another oil-rich Arab country, the hypocrisy is familiar. Colonel Gaddafi is “delusional” and “blood-drenched” while the authors of an invasion that killed a million Iraqis, who have kidnapped and tortured in our name, are entirely sane, never blood-drenched and once again the arbiters of “stability”.

US and allies step up military and intelligence operations in Libya

Ann Talbot | 07-03-2011 20:09 | Energy Crisis | Social Struggles | Terror War | Sheffield | World

The report that eight members of the UK’s Special Air Service (SAS) were briefly detained in Benghazi provides confirmation that the US and its European allies are stepping up their efforts to establish firm links with elements of the opposition to the regime of President Muammar Gaddafi and secure control of Libya’s oil resources.

British Army ready for Libya mission at 24 hours’ notice

Cem Ertür | 07-03-2011 18:27 | Other Press | Terror War | Sheffield

The Daily Telegraph, 5 March 2011
Unlike the non-violent protest movements in Egypt and Tunisia, the armed insurgency in Eastern Libya is directly supported by foreign powers with a view to justifying a "humanitarian intervention".

A military intervention is now contemplated by US NATO forces under a "humanitarian mandate". US and NATO military advisers and special forces are already on the ground.

The operation was planned to coincide with the protest movement in neighbouring Arab countries. Public opinion was led to believe that the protest movement had spread spontaneously from Tunisia and Egypt to Libya.

The real objective of "Operation Libya" is not to establish democracy but to take possession of Libya's oil reserves, destabilize the National Oil Corporation (NOC) and eventually privatize the country's oil industry, namely transfer the control and ownership of Libya's oil wealth into foreign hands.

Death Penalty for Bradley Manning, the Alleged #WikiLeaks Whistleblower?

Andy Worthington | 03-03-2011 10:59 | Repression | Technology | Terror War | Sheffield | World

Bradley Manning

Alleged WikiLeaks source Pfc. Bradley Manning, who has been in US custody since last May, after he reportedly told a former hacker that he had passed thousands of classified US military documents and diplomatic cables to WikiLeaks, had 22 new charges filed against him on Tuesday by the US Army, including a capital offense — “aiding the enemy” — for which the government has said it will not seek the death penalty, although, as Wired explained, “under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, the presiding judge ultimately decides what charges to refer to court-martial and whether to impose the death penalty.”
