As suggested in IndyMedia last month, Tarmac Northern Ltd have been able to persuade English Heritage that corporate profit is more important that Britain's heritage. English Heritage have caved in on their insistence for a proper investigation and now only wish to see minimal investigation to avoid a total loss of face.

Applying for planning permission from the local authority can be one of the most stressful things that you can do. Most people would not even bother is they realised the application was contrary to council policy, especially if in addition, English Heritage had said the development would have an unacceptable impact on a nationally important heritage site.

The Corporate Academy and the George Fox 6

freethepeeps | 18-09-2005 16:36 | Anti-militarism | Education | Social Struggles | Liverpool | Sheffield

On Monday 26th September, the trial of the George Fox 6 commences at Lancaster Magistrates Court. Six student activists face charges in a three day arising out of an action that took place at Lancaster University in September 2004 where protestors had gone into the George Fox building at the university to hand out leaflets and talk to people at the "Corporate Venturing" Conference - a networking meeting for multinational corporations. Speakers at the conference were drawn from controversial arms manufacturer BAE Systems, Shell and other companies the six say have 'long histories of human rights abuses and environmental destruction'. Police attended and told the protestors they were doing nothing wrong, but some months later they received summonses through the post. The defendants are seeking support at the trial.

Nottingham Protest against Deportations to Northern Iraq (Kurdistan) :: Pictures

Tash [alan lodge] | 22-08-2005 12:44 | Anti-racism | Migration | Social Struggles | Sheffield

Desperate to reach his targets, the home secretary is abducting Iraqi asyslum seekers to detention centres for return to Iraq. This goes against UNHCR advice that "failed" asylum seekers should not be sent back to Iraq, either forceably or by inducement, because the country is unstable and dangerous.

Building Threat to Greenbelt Land near Sheffield

Kath | 20-08-2005 03:15 | Ecology | Free Spaces | Social Struggles | Sheffield

On the 18 May 2005, Rotherham Council agreed to sell land ........which will be used to provide an access road............ This was agreed without consulting users of this open space................A detailed planning application to build 600 houses, by Bryant Homes, is expected shortly. It is felt that the Council will have a conflict of interest when dealing with this application. Why does Rotherham want to enable building on this open countryside when it has a large number of brown field sites?

Welcome to the G8
Some how, amongst much police confusion, where road blocks were not about stopping traffic, but 'discouraging it', we managed to get our vehicles up a narrow lane to what looked like the media entrance of Gleneagles hotel. Hidden behind a police pen and crowd of media was the G8 bike ride people.
