UG#645 - Potemkin Justice (Whistleblowers & Surveillance in 21st Century USA)

Robin Upton | 07-06-2013 09:03 | Policing | Social Struggles | Technology | Sheffield | World

Audio
A stark contrast with UG#644, we look this week behind the facade of the separation of powers in USA. Do any effective checks remain on how the US government behaves itself? Or is the external threat of massive dissent the only check left to the ongoing rollout of the totalitarian state's surveillance and control grid.

State Using ‘Secret Evidence’ To Try And Keep John Bowden Behind Bars

John Bowden (posted by Leeds ABC) | 08-01-2013 20:51 | Policing | Repression | Terror War | Sheffield | World

For the past 30 years John Bowden has been at the forefront of the British prison struggle, and is by far our most prolific prisoner writer. Time and again, John’s articles have shone a searchlight into the State’s murky dungeons, exposing brutality and repression, and challenging the very nature of prison. For many years now, John has been held in jail because of his political views and his willingness to challenge injustice. That has never been clearer than now, as the State attempts to use ‘secret evidence’ to keep him behind bars.

Can of Worms Opened: The EDL Conspiracy Theories Start Here

FashWatch | 08-01-2013 05:04 | Anti-racism | Policing | Social Struggles | Liverpool | Sheffield

The judge sentencing in the Tommy Robinson false passport case today opened a wriggling, purified can of worms. Stephen Yaxley Lennon of Luton was, as expected, sentenced to a jail term as almost everybody had expected (albeit a short and unsatisfactory one). That is no surprise, as passport fraud involving the United States, meant the UK felt compelled to act. What was not not expected, was the judge's strange but honest remarks about Tommy's actual identity.

november 5th #OpVendetta march on parliament - report & pics

rikki | 06-11-2012 00:22 | Policing | Social Struggles | Sheffield

disturbing peace banner
up to a thousand people took part this evening in a rally and march and film re-enactment. after gathering at trafalgar square, several hundred people marched down whitehall, many wearing iconic 'anon' masks, and gathered at the gates of parliament, taking over the road and closing it to traffic for several hours this evening. as numbers dwindled towards midnight, it seemed unlikely that westminster would erupt in flames shortly after midnight as it did in the film 'v for vendetta'.

The pursuit of Julian Assange is an assault on freedom and a mockery of journalism

John Pilger | 23-08-2012 18:01 | Policing | Repression | Technology | Sheffield | World

The British government's threat to invade the Ecuadorean embassy in London and seize Julian Assange is of historic significance. David Cameron, the former PR man to a television industry huckster and arms salesman to sheikdoms, is well placed to dishonour international conventions that have protected Britons in places of upheaval. Just as Tony Blair's invasion of Iraq led directly to the acts of terrorismin London on 7 July 2005, so Cameron and Foreign Secretary William Hague have compromised the safety of British representatives across the world.
