Protestors plant GM trial site with organic potatoes. (press release)

Contact Carl McCoy on 07858 177 178 | 22-04-2007 18:09 | Bio-technology | Ecology | Health | Sheffield

People from all over the country are currently planting organic potatoes in the field proposed as a GM potato trial site outside Hull. It is hoped that the donation of safe spuds will prevent the planting of the controversial crop, which threatens the livelihoods of local borage growers and organic farmers.

Anna Lock explained;
“If you want to eat good safe potatoes, you have to plant good safe potatoes. By planting organic potatoes in this field today, the field will be rendered unsuitable for the GM trial. Scientific experiments need controllable variables, tiny organic seed potatoes hidden deep in the ground are a variable controlled only by nature. These seed potatoes will grow and BASF’s experiment will no longer be possible on this site.”

Update: 2 cops on off road motorcycles have entered the field.

GM Danger to humans

steve | 16-03-2004 22:11 | Bio-technology | Health | Sheffield

Interesting reference article from the Evening Standard because it has direct evidence of harm to humans from GM crops. (Though I don't think this is the first instance as the article claims.)

Inevitable GM pollution

steve | 13-10-2003 10:09 | Bio-technology | Ecology | Sheffield

An article from Friday's Daily Mail (10.10.03) outlining the latest research on GM. Interesting quotes revealing the amount of known cross contamination in the UK and affirming that barrier crops don't work.

Although crop trashing has obviously had a powerful safeguarding effect more anti-GM gardeners are obviously needed.

GM Food and Crops: What Next?

steve | 01-09-2003 21:56 | Bio-technology | Ecology | Health | Technology | Sheffield

This briefing is an update on what has been happening on genetically modified (GM) food and crops and what is coming up in the near future. This autumn will see a number of key dates, including a report on the Government's public debate, GM Nation, a report on the Farm Scale Evaluations and the next steps in the GM Trade War between the US and Europe.

The decisions made over the next few months could have widespread repercussions for our food, farming and environment. Chief amongst these will whether the Government will allow GM crops to be commercially grown in the UK. If they do, the first could be grown as early as spring 2004.
