UG#691 - Big Drugs,Big Money& Big Guns (Deep State from Afghanistan to Susurluk)

Robin Upton | 18-09-2014 16:50 | Afghanistan | History | Terror War | Sheffield | World

Audio
We begin a new series this week, looking at the global drug trade and its key role in funding deep state groups. We begin with an expert on the Asian drug trade, Alfred McCoy. His 2010 talk, "Low-Intensity Conflict in the Drug Wars" focuses on opium production and its relationship to the proxy wars being fought in Afghanistan. We follow the heroin westwards to Turkey with a commentary by Sibel Edmonds who focuses on the nexus of the political and intelligence agency leaders, mobsters and drug traffickers which was brought to light by the "Susurluk scandal". This fateful 1996 car crash lead to the development of the phrase "Deep State" to describe the behind-the-scenes arrangements which were previously hidden from public view. While details of their operations remain unclear, they are increasingly understood to be more important to what really goes on than the for public consumption charade that is electoral politics.

Protesting drones at RAF Waddington, Lincs. Some photos

wpjf | 26-10-2012 22:15 | Afghanistan | Anti-militarism | Terror War | Sheffield | World

Twelve people demonstrated outside the main entrance to RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire today in response to the RAF's announcement that Britain is doubling its fleet of armed Reaper Drones from five to ten. While the demonstration was going on outside, the RAF was holding a ceremony to 'stand-up' its new drone squadron inside the base.

After the demonstration, we went round the other side of the base to meet Helen John who has been maintaining a one-woman anti-drone peace camp at Waddington for months.

Britain’s Own Pravda-Style Propaganda: Ten Years Of ‘Involvement’ In Afghanistan

Media Lens | 18-10-2011 14:16 | Afghanistan | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Terror War | Sheffield | World

Imagine Britain had been invaded and occupied by armed forces from another region of the world with China, for example, as a significant 'partner' in the 'coalition'. Imagine tens of thousands of Britons had been killed, and millions had fled as refugees. This is how the Chinese state broadcaster might report the invasion ten years hence:

'It's ten years this week since Chinese forces first became involved in Britain, and more than five years since they assumed responsibility for south-east England. So what's been achieved in that time?'

Occupied Afghanistan: The attack on the British Council in Kabul

Felicity Arbuthnot | 21-08-2011 15:09 | Afghanistan | Analysis | Anti-militarism | History | Sheffield | World

The British Council in Kabul, 19 August 2011

The attack on the British Council in Kabul on 19th August, resulting in twelve deaths and many injuries, further underlined how unwelcome the occupiers are, in a country in which they should never have been in the first place. Further tragedies, heaped on tragedies, also illustrated how out of touch those both on the ground in country - and those in high places abroad are. The day of the attack was both the Sabbath (Friday) and national holiday marking the 92nd anniversary of Afghanistan's independence from Britain in 1919 and of course, the 19th: 19 -1919.

Obama’s reign of terror in Afghanistan

James Cogan | 05-01-2011 01:53 | Afghanistan | Anti-militarism | History | Terror War | Sheffield | World

2010 was the bloodiest year of the now nine-year conflict in Afghanistan and the tribal border regions of Pakistan. Under the command of General David Petraeus, a massively expanded US and NATO force is waging a campaign of extermination against various ethnic Pashtun and Taliban-linked insurgent movements that have not accepted the foreign invasion of their country.

Afghanistan: NATO's ten-year war in South Asia

Rick Rozoff | 01-09-2010 15:58 | Afghanistan | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | Sheffield | World

member of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) - March 2006
In slightly over a month, on October 7, the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan will enter its tenth year.

The conflict represents the longest continuous combat operations in the history of the United States and Afghanistan alike. With the North Atlantic Treaty Organization for the only time in its existence activating its Article 5 mutual military assistance clause in September 2001 and thus entering the Afghan fray, European nations that had not been at war since the Second World War are now engaged in an endless combat mission.

There are 150,000 foreign troops in Afghanistan, 120,000 of them under the command of NATO's International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). Military personnel from over a quarter of the 192 members of the United Nations. They include soldiers from almost every European country, several Asia-Pacific states, and nations in the Americas and the Middle East.

The Afghanistan documents and the struggle against war

Bill Van Auken | 29-07-2010 08:05 | Afghanistan | Anti-militarism | History | Terror War | Sheffield | World

The public release of the 92,000 secret documents on the Afghanistan war by WikiLeaks, together with the reaction of the media and the official establishment, has immense political implications for the antiwar struggle in the US and internationally.

Afghanistan casualty rate highest of war

James Cogan | 26-07-2010 23:24 | Afghanistan | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Terror War | Sheffield | World

Eight months after the Obama administration announced a “surge” of 30,000 additional troops to Afghanistan to crush the Taliban-led insurgency, the rate of US and allied casualties has soared to the highest level of the nearly nine-year war and is beginning to match the bloodiest stages of the occupation of Iraq.
