Reception from the residents was uniformly friendly.
The BNP were there as well, and they knew we were coming. They sent us an abusive text earlier in the day, and had rung us to confirm. Unfortunately for them, they forgot to hide their phone number! Although it was not clear at the time (because they did nothing), two of them were in a black 4x4 watching Hucknall tram stop, but we arrived more or less together.
The white 4x4 reappeared at intervals throughout the evening and, at one point, the driver warned us that he had 30 people waiting in pubs and we had 20 minutes to get out of Hucknall.
Anybody who knows Hucknall knows that just like the rest of the country, most people hate the BNP, and we just got on with our leafleting. There was no sign of the driver's imaginary friends.
Leafleting one third of the ward will make a difference. Our leaflet went onto the mats on top of the BNP's Hucknall Patriot (not an impressive publication). We could have made an even bigger difference if we'd had more people.
ELECTION RESULTS:
Lib Dem: 848
Lab: 514
Independent: 389
BNP: 331
