BNP STOPPED IN HUCKNALL

Report from Hucknall Leafleting

There were ten of us in all when we met up with the Hucknall contingent at the end of the tram line. We managed to leaflet one third of the ward with leaflets saying "STOP the Fascist BNP in Hucknall West". We could have done with more people, and we were slowed up by garden gates and steps (why aren't all areas like Sneinton - terraced houses with front doors on the street?).

Reception from the residents was uniformly friendly.

The BNP were there as well, and they knew we were coming. They sent us an abusive text earlier in the day, and had rung us to confirm. Unfortunately for them, they forgot to hide their phone number! Although it was not clear at the time (because they did nothing), two of them were in a black 4x4 watching Hucknall tram stop, but we arrived more or less together.

The white 4x4 reappeared at intervals throughout the evening and, at one point, the driver warned us that he had 30 people waiting in pubs and we had 20 minutes to get out of Hucknall.

Anybody who knows Hucknall knows that just like the rest of the country, most people hate the BNP, and we just got on with our leafleting. There was no sign of the driver's imaginary friends.

Leafleting one third of the ward will make a difference. Our leaflet went onto the mats on top of the BNP's Hucknall Patriot (not an impressive publication). We could have made an even bigger difference if we'd had more people.

ELECTION RESULTS:
Lib Dem: 848
Lab: 514
Independent: 389
BNP: 331

Why do we have Fascists?

It's all very well slagging the BNP off. At the end of the end of the day they are dispicable. What needs addressing is why people vote for them. They don't vote necessarily out of ignorance. They vote out of a sense of injustice. To be white, working class and English is to be the lowest form of scum in our society. The BNP are wrong - but it's no wonder people vote for them.

True but....

I agree completely with you than the way to stop facism is to stop people feeling alienated and though acism is their only choice. This is infact what I do with the rest of my life, trying to empower people to take control of their own lives and their communities.

But when facism rears its ugly head, there is a direct threat that needs to be countered there and then.

The BNP are currently going on a campaign to try and make facism legitimate, each time they win a vote, leaflet an area etc. they become a more legitimate form of protest to aliented white people. But ech time they do that and are exposed for what they are then they become demoralised and don't get their legitemacy.

So yes work on a way of making the facists irrelevant, but each time it rears its head STAMP IT DOWN
