Cornelius Castoriadis, Autonomy, and Occupy Movement

Dimitris Eleas | 29-02-2012 17:06 | Occupy Everywhere | Culture | Education | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

I wrote this (funny and "very serious") text about the French philosopher of autonomy Cornelius Castoriadis (1922-1997), who would have supported Occupy Wall Street Movement, and Occupy Movement around the world.

My research is trying to find out what art works like Jeremy Deller's 'The Battle of Orgreave' - mean to the people who were directly affected by the events portrayed and I would very much like to reach them to invite them to the free screening on 28 Jan in Leeds.

Sheffield University Occupation: Official Statement on the Court Injunction

@sheffoccupation | 03-12-2011 15:26 | Occupy Everywhere | Education | Public sector cuts | Social Struggles | Sheffield

Sheffield University Occupation has been served with a court injunction which constitutes an attack on the right to protest. The injunction, obtained by the University management, has placed a one-year ban on all protests on University property (which could potentially include picket lines and campaign stalls) that have not been given written permission from the University. It is of course extremely unlikely that they would grant permission for any protest criticising the University over cuts, fees and education reform, hence this constitutes an effective ban on all protest at the University of which management does not approve. This will affect all groups and societies at the University, as well as lecturers and support staff picketing on days of strike action.

Youth Climate Event "Power Shift" Returns to UK

Sophie Wainwright | 24-09-2011 23:46 | Climate Chaos | Education | Energy Crisis | Liverpool | Sheffield

So many inspiring campaigns are taking place at the moment in the climate change movement: Moving Planet (a global day of climate action), campaigns on gas fracking and tar sands, and new climate campaigning films. Now is an exciting time to get involved.
That is what many young people will be doing this October at Power Shift: coming together to build the youth climate movement and take action on issues surrounding climate change. Power Shift will bring together hundreds of young people in Salford, Greater Manchester, for a weekend of workshops, inspiring speakers and cutting edge bands. It will give them the skills, inspiration and knowledge to campaign and communicate around the youth climate movement, and transferable skills for use in other social action campaigns.

For more information and to book tickets (from £10) please go to powershift.ukycc.org

Robin Upton | 03-09-2011 18:52 | Analysis | Education | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

This show anticipates a time when most people are not working for the man, but interacting through what Ivan Illich describes as 'Learning Webs'. We start with a US valedictorian, Erica Goldson's bold speech against the school machine, and the conclusion of the John Taylor Gatto interview. Then we read chapter 6 of Deschooling Society, Learning Webs, before concluding with some thoughts on how a decentralised money system might work.

The show this week reflects on why, in the face of dire predictions if we do not make big changes to how we live, so many people feel either powerless or even disinterested to try to effect such changes. We continue with last week's Gatto interview, followed by another chapter of Deschooling Society and an essay by Philip Balla.

UG#538 - Outing School 1 (Unmasking US Tax-Exempt Foundations' "Philanthropy")

Robin Upton | 11-03-2011 18:19 | Analysis | Education | History | Sheffield | World

Audio
The show this week features two friends from different generations who dish the dirt on the US forced schooling system and the tax-exempt foundations which engineered it. Our main interview is Norman Dodd, chief investigator of the 1953 'Reece Committee' on Tax Exempt Foundations, set in context by a reading from John Taylor Gatto's Underground History of American Education. Next it is Charlotte Iserbyt, ex-senior policy advisor in US Department of Education, followed by the first half of a 2004 Radio Free School interview with John Taylor Gatto.
