“It is important that different faith communities recognise the threat from racism and come together to oppose it by celebrating our multi-faith city,” says Abdool Gooljar, President of the Islamic Society of Britain (South Yorkshire). “By joining the Peace Walk, we are showing that those of us who wish to live in harmony with our neighbours are the majority.”
“Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called children of God”, says Rt Revd Dr Steven Croft, Bishop of Sheffield, quoting Jesus Christ. “Peace is a rich concept in the Christian scriptures. It is more than the absence of conflict but the presence of health and wholeness in an individual and in a society. There are many ways to share in peace making. The annual peace march is one of these ways as people of faith from different background come together in faith and solidarity together to demonstrate our care for one another and our determination not to be divided as neighbours in this city.”
"The Peace Walk is a very important signal to the city that people from different faith traditions are able to live and work alongside one another,” says Vernon Marsh, Chair of Sheffield Methodist District. “By walking together, we demonstrate that we are able to relate positively and constructively to each another, to talk together, to listen to one another, to form friendships and to engage in action for the good of the wider community.”
