But Burton Street also has long-standing connection with the music scene in Sheffield. Its premises , an old school, was at one time the Lansgett Music School, and was famously used as a main location for the Full Monty. Additionally, the Foundation rents it rooms and halls out to many of Sheffields Folk Dance troupes including. Lizzing Dripping, Sheffield City Morris , Treskel Sword dancers and Sheffield Celebrated Clog Dancers. For the past two years Burton Street had been the main venue for the Philladelpia Blues and Beer Festival and has been used as a venue for the Sheffield Folk festival. Burton Street also has its own recording anmd reherasl studio.
Fio the past two years Burton Street has been running monthly 'Open-Mic' nights for bands - and in September 2007 they started a weekly Open mic night aimed especially at Singer Songwriters called ' Sheffield Songwriters Circle'. Glenn Lee one of the organisers commented ' while Sheffield is lucky tohave a thriving livemusic sceen , it is noticable that many artists almost appologise for playing thier own music and so we wanted to provide a venue specially targeted at musicians who write and sing thier own work . We meed every ednday night from 7 - 10pm in the Bar at Burton Street Foundation and entry is free.'
It was the idea of a number of the musicians coming to the Songwriters night to produce a live CD to support the work of Burton Street . This was recorded in November and features 22 tracks from 13 acts including Anna Haigh, Rob Tarana, Tom Carpenter, Glenn Lee, Tina McKevitt and Nick Gill. The CD is now available for purchase direcltly from Burton Street or the artists and all the tracks can be previewed for free and bought as legal digital downloads from www.indiestore.com/songwriterscircle.
