To highlight the ongoing Nottingham campaign against the sale of foie gras, (the diseased liver of a grossly force fed goose or duck), in support to the imminent vote against foie gras in York, and drawing strength from the successful campaign in Sheffield, supporters of Nottingham Animal Rights held a protest on the opening night of Nottingham's Goose Fair.
It was too good an opportunity to miss - a four meter high goose on one of the busiest road junctions in Nottingham, at the beginning of Nottingham's biggest annual event, the Goose Fair. It was just sitting there begging to give it's support to free it's brothers (for once it is the males that suffer) from the barbarous trade in foie gras.
Although the practice is to cruel to be legally practiced in the UK, ducks and geese on the continent are force fed through pipes to fatten their livers for this supposed 'delicacy'. This can damage their throats and can cause bloating, ulcers and disease.
The protest was held to highlight the campaign by Nottingham Animal Rights to remove foie gras from the small number of unscrupulous restaurants that continue selling it in Nottingham (see below) and in support of colleagues in York who, the next day, would be holding an demonstration in support of vote for a proposed York-city-wide council ban on the product.
