Unlike other parts of Sheffield, Sheffield South's minorities are far fewer amongst the townships. Recent racist attacks give reason to call for clamp down and eviction of racist tenants.
The Mosborough for two years seems to have have had relatively few problems; but over the last week, ignorant youths have been riding motorbikes up and down footpaths close to schools; revving up their engines next to pushchairs; kids aged 11-15 are skinning up with class A drugs (skunk) and drinking bottles of wine; any amenities built as parks in the country walk areas are destroyed literally within days; and more recently a house was attacked by a mob of about 15 children aged 10-15 who had attacked a lady and two children with stones before shouting racist abuse at her and later verbally abusing and shouting racist remarks at her husband when he went to tell them they were in trouble with the police for their racism.
Police have been informed about the racist attacks and have stated that there are a group of children who already have a police tab on them. Waiting for the police, the man reporting the racist attacks was threatened by a woman from the local Westfield estate and told by a man that if he "went down there" would face getting his neck broken. Other threats put forward, even by young children involved serious verbal abuse, violent threats, racist and innappropriate homophobic comments.
School headteachers in the area are going to be well informed about these racist attacks and the police are taking the matter seriously, with a view to arresting suspected racial abusers. The council has been told about the problem as well. According to one local source, the council "don't mess about regarding these matter. If they find out who it is, the perpetrators may face eviction from the area."
It is time that the communities in the South of Sheffield realise that we live in a multi-cultural society and that racism will never be tolerated, no matter who from. One of the roots of the problems may stem from a lack of rewarding and stimulating activities for kids, who, as the police put it can develop a "pack mentality" when confronting adults and performing such malicious attacks against others in the community. Parents of offenders should be warned, that the system is changing so that punishment for such racial crimes, even amongst juveniles will be steeped up and lenience will be out of the question.
