This is an amazing pub and beer garden and has served us all well. It deserves to be listed as a place of cultural significance, protected and celebrated. It cannot be turned into luxury apartments - it needs to remain a pub.
It's range of real ales is a reflection of the Rutland's focus on Sheffield's Campaign for Real Ale. The pub's free wireless internet network has been useful to many activists and geeks who needed to work whilst enjoying a relaxing drink.
The pub's amazing kitsch decor is legendary with themed corners reflecting figures from Greak, Roman and Egyptian mythology. The pub has resisted games machines, sports television and juke boxes - though the pub's in-house collection of 40's and 50's easy listening is usually turned up to the max after closing time to clear out any remaining stragglers.
The Rutland's postion in Sheffield's Cultural Industries Quarter has made it a civilised haven from the crass atmosphere of Sheffield's more in-yer-face nightspots and the pub has been popular with musicians, students and media professionals - a true community facility.
