“Ignorance and misunderstanding are the underlying causes of racism. Music cuts through all that crap so we can judge a human being by the quality of their soul and musicality which are so much more important than the colour of there skin or their nationality” Richard Hawley, June 2006.
This album was conceived at the time of the local elections (back in the not so distant time of May 2006) when the BNP gained council members in the borough of Barking and put up a large number of candidates across the country. In Sheffield a highly motivated and organised anti-racism campaign meant that despite their best efforts the BNP's vote was significantly reduced.
The city has a long and proud history of challenging racism and an equally proud history of producing great music. We combined the two strands when we formed the Sheffied Love Music Hate Racism (LMHR) group, in the tradition of the Rock Against Racism movement of the 1970's. Our plan, to promote the energy and quality of our music scene and use it to celebrate diversity and to involve people in anti-racist activity; showing a unified face against the malicious and divisive tactics of the far right. The group pulled the stops out and put together a double CD of Sheffield artists in double quick time.
Everything on the album has been donated, from the tracks themselves to the mastering, and the design. We believe that we have come up with is a brilliant snapshot of the music made in the city at this precise moment; a time when the city’s music scene is really jumping.
Thirty-five tracks are split across two discs covering virtually every musical base from indie-pop (Monkey Swallows The Universe) to conscious Soul (Bare Knuckle Soul) to Mercury Award Nominee Richard Hawley’s dark crooning to raw Drum n Bass (Ben Fraser) to country blues (Outroads) blissful electro (Hiem) to sweet positive reggae (Riddimtion Band) to Funk (Ninio) to the mighty rap outfit Hoodz Underground, all blessed by the godfather of Sheffield electronic music, Richard. H. Kirk (Cabaret Voltaire).
The album is on sale from Sheffield's branch of Fopp Records, Jacks Records & Forever Changes or can be bought directly from the website: www.lmhrsheffield.co.uk.
