Camp for Climate Action gathering in Nottingham this weekend

Camp for Climate Action | 08.02.2006 11:27 | Ecology | Sheffield

Camp for Climate Action gathering in Nottingham this weekend, 11th -12th February. A monthly orgainising meeting to prepare for the Camp for Climate Action, 26th August - 4th September, is been held at the Sumac Centre in Nottingham.

A camp for climate action is being organised to take place in the North of England from 26th August to 4th September, 2006.

The camp will:

take action against climate change;

provide information on climate change and its causes;

share and live practical solutions;

network with other people campaigning on all the aspects of climate change.

Everyone is invited to get involved and come to a public meeting:

11am - 6pm 11th and 12th February at The Sumac Centre, Nottingham

Accommodation is available if you contact us in advance. Please also contact us about any access, dietary or creche needs. The meeeting space is fully accessible

This is a DIY camp and will be organised through working groups. If you want to be involved we suggest you join one of these working groups at a meeting, but to help you decide before then see here for the list.

Who we are:
We are a loose coalition of people determined to take positive action against the root causes of climate change. Climate change is one of the major threats to people, animals and our planet. It won't be tackled by greenwash and petitions, but by an end to the system that requires economic growth. We need to take action and we need to do it now. Solutions need to come from the people and not the corporations or politicians. We know that nuclear power is not the answer.

We recognise that everyone has a role to play in dealing with climate change - that we need to alter our own lifestyles and that working together in our communities is the way forward.

Aims
We are putting on a camp for climate action on the 26th August to 4th September 2006 in the north of England, involving thousands of people.

The camp's core aims will be to take direct action against climate chaos and to be an inspiring space for workshops, information sharing, discussion and debate. We invite people to join us - we want to bring together people campaigning against the many industries that are at the root of climate change e.g.the petrochemical industry, meat, dairy; road and airport expansion.

We aim to be carbon neutral - it is vital that the camp and preparations for the camp generates as few emissions as possible. We encourage people to travel in ways that cause least environmental damage - no flying please!

How we work
We are against all forms of discrimination and seek to be as inclusive as possible.

We work through collective decision making where everyone gets an equal say in an open and transparent fashion. Meetings will be central to this process and will have facilitators, whose role is to help this process rather than taking on a leadership role .The camp will be organised and run by working groups covering everything from plumbing and toilets to legal and welfare to workshops and entertainment. Working groups are being formed and we invite everyone who shares our aims and visions to join a working group and to be involved in the process.

Structure
We will have monthly meetings, generally consisting of two days with the purpose of updating and introducing, making decisions and bringing working groups together. Working groups will be divided into subgroups and will be trusted to make autonomous decisions, within guidelines agreed and/or ratified at monthly meetings. The priority of the meetings is to organise the camp. However it is important that this is done in such a way as to encourage and support local activity. It's also important that the camp helps the formation of networks that take action on climate change after the camp is over.

We would like the camp to be organised around neighbourhoods and invite groups to come forward to host them. For example a neighbourhood may be made up of people from a certain action group or a geographical area. They may have their own kitchen and meeting space. We envisage that these will be the spaces in which people make links and find ways to organise at a local level. If groups are interested in hosting a neighbourhood they are encouraged to send at least one to each monthly meeting.

correction: please note

08.02.2006 14:22

please note that the times are as in the agenda, not as in the first part of the message, ie 11-6 Saturday, 10-5 Sunday.

Also the dates/place for the one after are set as 11-12 March, Oxford, but I'd recommend getting involved as soon as possible. If you can't come to a general meeting, go to the website and contact the working group you're interested in (under 'get involved').

And please, don't post the email address as above, but with an AT instead of an @ 'cos we'll now have to deal with loads of spam! Thanks, and see you along the way - it's all very exciting and building fast.

Climate Gathering Catering & Sumac Centre Cafe

08.02.2006 20:35

Sumac Centre
Sumac Centre

As the Sumac Centre is hosting this weekend gathering, note that the Sumac Cafe may be a bit stretched for serving regular customers. (It is the policy, and purpose of the Sumac Centre to host campaign and networking gatherings of this nature, about once each quarter).

Veggies Catering Campaign are providing the Gathering catering, and intend to produce plenty for other visitors to Sumac, who we hope will use the opportunity to get involved, or at least interested, in the planning of the Climate Change Action Camp.

On Saturdays the volunteer run, and community-based, Sumac Cafe is now open for a 'People's Kitchen' style meal in the evening, rather than the daytime, so this will happen as usual, although the meal may be served a little later than the usual 6.30, to allow the gathering participants to be fed first.

In keeping with the Gathering theme, and Veggies involvement in the Movement for Compassionate Living we hope to provide a meal based seasonal vegetables that are (or at least could be) grow in our local region. (The Movement for Compassionate Living promotes sustainable lifestyles, vegan organic food production, and tree culture instead of animal farming, ...)

On Sunday the Cafe is normally open from 11am - 3pm, and Veggies hope to maintain this, with breakfasts, soups, cake etc being available all day from the occasional 'garden marquee' - dress up warm as it will not be appropriate during a climate change gathering to provide heating out in the garden!

See details of Sumac Centre events, and those of many other like-minded groups, on Veggies Diary at http://www.veggies.org.uk/diary.htm, where you can also subscribe to the Sumac News Digest for regular event announcements.
