The parade commences on Martin Luther King Blvd at Crenshaw and lasts for two miles until Western. It includes more than 150 floats, 20 drill teams, ten dance groups, celebrities aplenty and the bombastic tunes of a military marching band.

Dr Martin Luther King Jr has become a symbol of the struggle for racial equality in the United States and beyond. His civil rights successes, inspired by the passive resistance of Mahatma Gandhi, led him to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 and his legacy is still keenly felt throughout the world today.
The backdrop to King's struggle was one of fear and division and, whilst racism still abounds, the level of segregation in 1950s America is easily forgotten today. There were separate water fountains for whites and blacks, black balconies in theatres and segregated seating on board buses. Black children had to be escorted to the new mixed schools under armed guard.
