Obama genuflects to AIPAC

Stephen Lendman | 24-05-2011 20:57 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Palestine | Sheffield | World

Obama arrives to speak at the AIPAC convention in Washington, 22 May 2011

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) is "the most powerful and feared lobby in Washington." For years, it's "drawn on a well-organized, well-connected, highly visible, successful, and wealthy Jewish population," subverting potential opposition.

Obama's May 22 AIPAC speech affirmed rock solid support for a "strong and secure Israel," leaving Palestinians entirely out of his equation, despite paying disingenuous lip service to their interests.

An official AIPAC statement expressed gratitude for his assurance that Washington doesn't expect Israel to withdraw to June 1967 borders, besides explicitly calling Hamas a terrorist organization, ignoring its January 2006 electoral victory as Palestine's legitimate government.

The Israeli military establishment is once again on the offensive, but instead of high-tech weaponry and missiles, it is using computer screens, keyboards and rapid wireless connections to fight what Israeli military representatives are dubbing a "new media war."

Wikileaks Cables on Israel's Gaza Onslaught

Kathleen Christison | 20-01-2011 01:13 | History | Palestine | Terror War | Sheffield | World

CounterPunch has accessed Wikileaks’ file of cables on Israel’s Gaza assault  http://www.counterpunch.org/wikigazacables.html two years ago (Operation Cast Lead, December 27, 2008 through January 18, 2009). Though the cables often simply rehash Israeli press reporting, providing little new insight into Israel’s attack or the planning behind it, they show with pitiless clarity the U.S. government to be little more than a handmaiden and amanuensis of the Israeli military machine.

Media Lens Alert: Tilting Towards Israel

Journalist Jonathan | 04-01-2011 17:06 | Palestine | Sheffield | World

Towards the end of last year, we sent out two media alerts - Put The Palestinians On A Diet and Too Toxic To Handle? - about the corporate media's failure to report the release of documents detailing Israel's deliberate policy of near-starvation for Gaza. "The idea", explained a senior Israeli official, "is to put the Palestinians on a diet, but not to make them die of hunger." The human rights group Gisha published explicit Israeli formulas for the amount of food, animal feed and poultry to be allowed into Gaza, and the cold calculation of "breathing space": the number of days before these essential supplies would run out.

Wikileaks: Israel Plans Total War on Lebanon, Gaza

Juan Cole | 04-01-2011 10:46 | Anti-militarism | Palestine | Terror War | Sheffield | World

The Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten  http://www.aftenposten.no/nyheter/uriks/wikileaks/article3969332.ece has summarized an Israeli military briefing by Israeli Chief of Staff Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi of a US congressional delegation a little over a year ago and concludes that

"‘ The memo on the talks between Ashkenazi and [Congressman Ike] Skelton, as well as numerous other documents from the same period of time, to which Aftenposten has gained access, leave a clear message: The Israeli military is forging ahead at full speed with preparations for a new war in the Middle East."

Lebanese people welcome President Ahmadinejad, 13 October 2010
Nearly a week now since Ahmadinejad’s departure, the 12 Palestinian camps and two ‘gatherings’, especially among the young people, are still abuzz with often excited discussions of his visit. What President Ahmadinejad brought to the under-30 generation in the Palestinian camps is more hope, energy, and self-confidence.
