UN 'Travesty': Resolutions Of Mass Destruction

@medialens | 14-02-2012 15:54 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Terror War | Sheffield | World

It has been said that compassion is 'the only beauty that truly pleases' (Aryasura, The Marvelous Companion, Dharma Publishing, 1983, p.305). While beauty ordinarily provokes the fiery itch of desire or the sullen shadow of envy, compassion is cooling, blissful, inspiring awe and wonder. It implies an ability to stand outside our own needs as observers, to perceive the suffering of others as of equal or greater importance. But like all forms of beauty, compassion can be faked, exploited.

The World War on Democracy

B-1B Lancer Bombers on a runway at Diego Garcia, November, 2001, bombing Iraq
Lisette Talate died the other day. I remember a wiry, fiercely intelligent woman who masked her grief with a determination that was a presence. She was the embodiment of people's resistance to the war on democracy. I first glimpsed her in a 1950s Colonial Office film about the Chagos islanders, a tiny creole nation located midway between Africa and Asia in the Indian Ocean.

#Occupy and the Church

Mark Barrett and Ginger Haag @OccupyLSX | 09-01-2012 14:13 | Occupy Everywhere | Analysis | Sheffield | World

“What would Jesus do?” asked a pithy placard at the Occupy the London Stock Exchange protest recently. It seems rather obvious in a way. For some the answer was given in another St Paul’s placard, carried by a man dressed as Jesus “I threw out the money-lenders for a reason”. Of course we’re not in Jerusalem, nor are we technically in a temple.

Syria: The orwellian "Responsibility to Protect" used to justify all out war

Mahdi Darius Nazemroaya | 30-11-2011 15:06 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Anti-racism | Sheffield | World

The concept of “Responsibility to Protect” (R2P) essentially posits that a country’s independence is not a right and can be taken away by the international community when the need arises. The international community under the R2P paradigm has the responsibility to intervene in any independent country in order to protect that country’s citizens.

The Syrian Arab Republic now faces the “Responsibility to Protect” (R2P) as a threat. R2P is being prepped to be wielded as a weapon by Washington and NATO. It is a neo-imperialist device under the cover of sheep’s skin that appropriates the language of humanitarianism. The plan is to oust President Bashar Al-Assad from power and install a new client government in Damascus.

Media lies used to provide a pretext for another "humanitarian war"

Julie Lévesque | 27-11-2011 13:16 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Other Press | Sheffield | World

The Independent, 19 August 2011
According to numerous reports from the Western media, human rights organisations, as well as the UN, countless peaceful civilians have been killed by the Syrian forces since the beginning of the unrest in the country in mid March. But where do the numbers come from? Many media reports on the alleged deadly repression by the Syrian government fail to mention the sources of their information, which are very often referred to solely as "human rights groups" or "activists":

The reliance of the mainstream media on information emanating from anonymous groups provides a biased understanding of the Syrian protests, which in turn supports the broader objective of destabilizing the Syrian regime. When information from unknown sources pertaining to the death toll is published either by a mainstream media or a recognized human rights group, it is invariably picked up and considered as "factual evidence" by other news sources or think tanks, without further verification. Moreover, in the process the information is subject to further distortion.

The 1%'s New Battle: Selling War on Iran

Word.'s blog @OWSLosAngeles | 22-11-2011 19:38 | Occupy Everywhere | Analysis | Anti-Nuclear | Terror War | Sheffield | World

In the face of all that presently ails America--stagnant economy, staggering income disparity, high chronic unemployment, mass demonstrations coast to coast--a remedy is desperately needed. For a ruling elite concerned only with maintaining power, only one solution can address these concerns and those that are forthcoming. Yep. It’s time for another war.

Sole military Super-Bloc: NATO Issues Daily Reprieves To The World

Rick Rozoff | 05-11-2011 00:34 | Analysis | Anti-militarism | Globalisation | Sheffield | World

A Stop NATO feature in August provided an, admittedly incomplete, list of nations that NATO, actuated by its first Strategic Concept for the 21st century adopted at the bloc’s summit in Lisbon last November and its initial implementation in Libya this year, could attack or otherwise intervene in next: Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Central African Republic, Chad, Cuba, Democratic Republic of Congo, Cyprus, Ecuador, Eritrea, Iran, Lebanon, Madagascar, Mali, Moldova-Transdniester, Myanmar, Nicaragua, Niger, Nigeria, North Korea, Pakistan, Palestine, Somalia, the South Caucasus (Abkhazia, Nagorno-Karabakh, South Ossetia), Sudan-South Sudan, Suriname, Syria, Uganda, Venezuela, Western Sahara, Yemen and Zimbabwe.

The time is ripe and in fact long overdue for issuing a call for an international anti-NATO initiative addressed to individuals, organizations, political parties and governments to convene an extraordinary session of the United Nations General Assembly to demand the disbanding of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization as a – as the gravest – threat to world peace.

UG#573 - I Spit in The Face Of The Money God (Mike Ruppert, Collapsenik)

Robin Upton | 21-10-2011 14:48 | Analysis | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

Audio
We devote the whole show this week to a remarkable talk from 2011-09-11 by Michael Ruppert, who back in episode 95 became the first speaker on this show to question the events of Sep 11th. However, in this talk he says that 9/11 belongs to a 'bygone era' and he focuses instead on the urgent need to transition away from a paradigm of infinite growth and fiat currency.

UG#571 - Mother Nature Knows Best (Masanobu Fukuoka, Helen & Scott Nearing)

Robin Upton | 21-10-2011 14:31 | Analysis | Ecology | Health | Sheffield | World

Audio
This week we hear about three people who, unimpressed by technological 'progress', quit city life to live successfully off the land - all three of them remained active into their 90's. Although travelling widely, they remained rooted to their homestead farms. In our first hour, Masanobu Fukuoka, who researched no-till farming in Japan for decades before Bill Mollison and David Holmgren coined the word permaculture. In our second hour, an audio adaptation of a film on the life and death of US back-to-the-lander Helen Nearing, and her husband, Scott.
