Robin Upton | 17-10-2013 01:38 | Occupy Everywhere | Repression | Social Struggles | Workers' Movements | Sheffield | World

Audio
After the last show on Chris Hedges, this week we hear a discussion about his controversial 2012 Truthdig article in which referred to "Black Bloc anarchists" as "the cancer of the Occupy movement". He debates with Crimethinc on just how violent is it acceptable (or advisable) to be. Along the way we discuss the purpose of occupy and who defines what violence is anyway?

UG#651 - Deep Green Resistance (Earth At Risk Conference)

Robin Upton | 02-07-2013 22:48 | Occupy Everywhere | Analysis | Ecology | Social Struggles | Sheffield | World

Audio
A trio of speakers this time, two of whom have been regular contributors to the show. We listen in on a conference that happened in California in 2011 entitled Earth At Risk. While they outline contrasting approaches to resistance, the speakers are united in their conviction that the culture of capitalist golobalisation has no mechanism for self-regulation and so Direct Action is necessary to stop its ongoing ecocide.

UG#627 - The Progressive Process of Desocialization (Marxian Class Analysis 4)

Robin Upton | 29-03-2013 17:28 | Occupy Everywhere | Analysis | History | Social Struggles | Sheffield

Audio
This week, two Marxist professors speak on the social impact of capitalism and especially in USA. First, Silvia Federici speaks on 'The Progressive Process of Desocialization', how capitalism breaks down communities and people's human relationships of care. Next it is the turn of Richard Wolff who applies his Marxian class analysis to the US household, noting that more and more adults are rejecting the traditional (feudal) model of domestic exploitation and either living alone or in more egalitarian patterns.

Then Noam Chomsky on how to broaden Occupy and on its relationship to the US Republicrat kabuki. Finally P2P theorist Michel Bauwens sets Occupy in the context of emerging peer production. We conclude with another reading from chapter 7 of David Graeber's Debt, The First 5000 Years.

A Rebellious World or a New Dark Age?

Noam Chomsky | 08-05-2012 20:28 | Occupy Everywhere | Analysis | Anti-Nuclear | Climate Chaos | Sheffield | World

The Occupy movement has been an extremely exciting development. Unprecedented, in fact. There’s never been anything like it that I can think of. If the bonds and associations it has established can be sustained through a long, dark period ahead -- because victory won’t come quickly -- it could prove a significant moment in American history.

Noam Chomsky on America's Declining Empire, #Occupy and the Arab Spring

Joshua Holland @AlterNet | 25-04-2012 21:04 | Occupy Everywhere | Analysis | History | Sheffield | World

Audio
Last year, the Occupy Movement rose up spontaneously in cities and towns across the country, radically shifted the discourse and rattled the economic elite with its defiant populism. It was, according to Noam Chomsky, “the first major public response to thirty years of class war.” In his new book, Occupy  https://www.alternet.org/alternetbooks/28/occupy/ , Chomsky looks at the central issues, questions and demands that are driving ordinary people to protest. How did we get to this point? How are the wealthiest 1 percent influencing the lives of the other 99 percent? How can we separate money from politics? What would a genuinely democratic election look like?

What the Third National Occupy UK Conference Can Teach Us

Ragnhild Freng Dale | 13-02-2012 11:37 | Occupy Everywhere | Sheffield

Occupy Sheffield hosted the third national Occupy UK Conference over the weekend 20-22 January. Around a hundred Occupiers from the north, south, east and west of Britain, plus visitors from Geneva and Australia, came together to share experiences and plan future strategies. The conference was, for many, a much needed fire-lighter, invigorating and inspiring. A place where passionate individuals, usually dispersed around the country, could find each other and create networks.

Occupy Sheffield camp to end but a new phase begins

@OccupySheffield @Citadel_of_Hope | 11-02-2012 00:26 | Occupy Everywhere | Sheffield

Occupy Sheffield Moving Forwards
On Monday 13 February 2012, the occupation on Cathedral Square will be gone, but Occupy Sheffield will continue. The snow has been fun, but the threat of over £100,000 of High Court costs, and the Cathedral’s answer to peaceful, public protest as eviction has made the decision easier.
