Attempts by the Anarchist Federation to organise an anti-EDL meeting in Leeds yesterday failed dismally.

Having (badly) advertised a public meeting in Leeds to oppose the EDL, the clueless idiots of the AF didn't bother to organise any form of security whatsoever. Entirely predictably, the EDL took advantage of the open target and walked into the meeting. The AF have no pedigree whatsoever in terms of antifascism, and in handing the EDL such an easy victory, have shown themselves to be a liability and an embarrassment.

I'm all in favour of more meaningful anti-fascist activity, but what possibly made A-fed think they had the 'authority' to organize this sort of meeting. From what I've seen most of them seem to be daft young kids. It should have been obvious that a public meeting of this type (not that I saw it advertized anywhere) needed to be secured, particularly in light of recent EDL activity. A-fed are an embarressment

Elsewhere obviously, because I didn't know fuck all about this meeting. Fair play to you in turning over these mugs, but don't assume that all West Yorkshire anti-fascists are this soft or stupid.

I definitely think we need to build a mass alternative to the UAF/SWP, but this level of organisation and security hardly inspires confidence. Leeds afed ought to learn to walk before they try to run, otherwise they risk looking arrogant as well as stupid.

It must have been either extreme niavety or a massive accident in not providing adequate security for a meeting that was publically advertised and spoke of 'the fight on the streets' against the likes of the EDL and material roots of fascism. Especially after it has been noted by EDL members that thus far the only threat to them phyiscal threat (of an overtly political nature) has been 'black bloc militant anarchists' as called in an EDL action report.
So, why wasn't this meeting stewarded? Also, from my experience, only a few AFers have ever engaged in the types of antifascism that they state their support for.

The EDL walked all over the AF and made them look like idiots. I hope the silly sods intend to make them pay for it. If they'd been a bit more clued up in the first place they wouldn't have handed our enemies such an easy victory.

If this is true it's a very sad state of affairs. Anarchists wth pretentions towards millitant anti-fascism need to take security seriously. A minmum should be a stewarding group of competent lads/lasses who are up for it and preferably with experience in combat sports (Muay Thai, Boxing, BJJ or MMA) or of course good old fashioned street fighting rather than "self defence" or other bullshit. Furthermore all active mebers of a group should be prepared to defend their politics/meetings etc should the need arise.
