Brecon pipeline sabotaged

tony brown | 21.08.2007 15:09 | Climate Camp 2007 | Climate Chaos | Ecology | Sheffield

Brecon becons Gas pipeline attacked

The Brecon beacons gas pipeline works were sabotaged during a night action as part of the week of action against climate change and in defence of the earth. Armed with only a wrecking bar and determination a small team was able to bypass the poor security and render immobile a total of 11 machines including tipper trucks and excavators. Major engine and hydraulic components were destroyed and the pipeline itself was holed in several places.
This action was carried out by normal people and was easy to achieve others should consider similar actions.
The pipeline is destroying natural habitats in order to supply a fuel that we cannot burn if the life on this planet is to survive. Consider the costs environmental tax.

bit more background?

could i request i tuny bit more background on the pipeline and it's ecological implications?
Is it a gas pipeline - and if so, how green is gas compared to oil and nuclear energy?

Ta.

gas ... oil ... coal ... electricity?

21.08.2007 16:16

What do you use to heat you house in the winter? Or do you just wrap up warm?

Well done

21.08.2007 18:11

Well done!

Fantastic action. Ignore any carping from AF types or trolls below them.

Again, well done, stay free though - be careful!

Gas is dodgy, its co2& we have to rely on Putin+unsafe shipping channels. We can sort 60-70% of current fuel usage with geothermal groundsource heating pumps. They payback within around 5 years, then you have free heating & cooling in summer, for terraced houses or in towns it could be done collectivelly.
Have a search on google, theres companies doing it, if any cooperatives want to do it Iam based in nottingham & I have business & on site experience, would need people with more plumbing & electrical skills.

ps brilliant action, brecon beacons are sacred, how dare they!
it also makes us all open to sabotage & blackmail by Putin etc

geothermal??

21.08.2007 19:49

so let's see - you're going to provide heating for 8 million people + all the offices and businesses from the clay underneath London?

unfortunately gas is necesary

21.08.2007 20:12

unfortunately gas is a necesary transition fuel if we are to beat climate change

Emissions implications of Brecon pipeline

21.08.2007 20:19

The Brecon pipeline should not be opposed because it's importing gas. Even with the CNG process involved this has less CO2 emissions than coal or oil per heating calorie, because there is proportionately less carbon in natural gas (CH4). Devil or the deep blue sea?

The key objection should be that the Milford Haven terminal was approved first and now the pipeline will carve through peat bog in the Brecon Beacons. The carbon emissions caused by digging into a peat bog and breaking up its water table can be very considerable and this was also one of the main objections to the Lewis Island windfarm.

Are groundsource heat pumps electricity or gas powered? If electric powered (like a fridge) then that's not markedly different in emissions footprint from shipped gas (leaving aside the peat bog issue). Most of the marginal electricity will be from fossil fuel, from which the majority of the energy is lost in electricity generation and transmission.

object but don't cause criminal damage.

21.08.2007 21:19

I'm not in favour of the pipeline (it runs straight past me), and I am an environmentalist. I am all for peaceful protest, but I can't encourage or approve of vandalism. It will give us all a bad name, and then we don't get taken seriously when we have something to say (would you negotiate or listen to someone that was vandalising your possesions?)

object and cause criminal damage... if you like

21.08.2007 22:06

well done for being bold. for what it's worth I and many others who have also not ever met you or ever will are happy for what you have chosen to do.

wouldn't bother listening to the opinions of the law abiding minority (as revealed in a recent poll !!). the culture of these isles (not to mention the media) emphasises the opinions of those who are pro-property by scaring or beating the rest into silence.

To James B:

"ignore carping from AF types" - Shut up you fucking wally!
I am the only AF person to have posted here and i asked a couple of questions, i didn't criticise. The AF has a long and proud history of environmental activity - a recent example would be our participation in the climate camp, our continued support for Rossport and our coverage of eco issues in our newsheet.

who do you think we are you muppet?

you are reading the indymedia *news*wire - it is not necessary for the original poster to state the entire case when reporting an action.

London Underground?

22.08.2007 12:58

You're going to heat the homes of London from waste heat from the Underground? Now tell me - where does this energy come from? The tube trains? And what do they run on? Electricity. Which means coal, oil, nuclear, gas - but aren't those forbidden?

Yes, I know the geology of London - sedimentary, my dear Watson. And you are never, ever, going to able to extract enough energy from this to heat the homes, offices and workplaces of 8 million people.

nice one

22.08.2007 13:56

Great action; ignore the nitpickers :)

Will try to make it over there sometime soon to help!

Bobby thats a fair point, but i rather expeced a discussion to develop indepentdent of the OP, which it has. I don't think its quite settled anway.

To add to the mix i'd say - green or not their is some mileage in opposing energy developments that fuck up the lives of local people and the local environment. Its certainly a factor.... Not one that i often agree with to be honest: people complaining about wind farms on welsh hillsides ruining the view - what, like coal mines didn't?

In think a particularly stromg argument for energy sources like wind and solar oursied of the eco debate is for energy autonomy - localised power sources that give communites greater independence. If we are fighting the dominon of big business, not being dependent on its pretty useful.
