As participants of Saturday 21st’s Save ESOL march gathered outside Sheffield City Hall they were treated to a pleasant surprise by the recently resurrected Sheffield Food Not Bombs group, who provided the catering for the demonstration. Offering an alternative to the neo-liberal fast food restaurants that clog our city centres; Sheffield FNB served spicy potato wraps and cous-cous salad for free to the general public. Nearly 100 people were kept happy by a combination of delicious vegan food and a range of music that joined the dots between full-on psychedelic trance and Spandau Ballet! Despite the combined efforts of the wind and City Hall water fountain’s continual splashing to scupper the stall, FNB’s message of self-organisation was warmly received by the demonstrators and the general public alike.
With Sheffield Food Not Bombs we aim to provide free food to those in need, catering for events and information concerning self-organisation, revolutionary politics and local issues. We are an autonomous, non-hierarchal group made up of both politically affiliated and non-affiliated members. The reason we can provide food for free is simple: that is what it has cost us! The wasteful nature of capitalist food distribution means plenty of useable food is discarded daily as profit is put before human need. Food Not Bombs is, however, not the solution, it only increases awareness of the problem. For this reason we invite anyone who would like to get involved, have information distributed on our stalls or propose events to join our mailing list;

Food for Peace?

Not sure how this would be food for peace. Not sure about whether we should be pandering to some kind of mythical 'mainstream support' (i.e. conformists) either.

the quality and calibre of the food on display in barkers pool will only ever drive and keep mainstream support away from our causes ! mainsream support is not something to feel uncomfortable about you are not necessarily pandering to conformist idealogy by reaching out to the masses who need reaching and communicating with by whatever means possible ie burgers and kebabs.

my song/statement follows
"BUG BEARS IF THE FUTURE"
hey bugbears of the future, we must find a way
To walk beneath your palaces of doom.
Hey now, look at the papers, they are telling me
the final curtain's falling real soon...
Maybe i'll go out to the country, bury my head in the sand.
Maybe i'll find a lonely woman, wants to settle down...
Maybe I'll pray to the Lords of Light, bring some mercy here
Or maybe the sound of marching feet will somehow, dispel the fear
chorus
Oh we're only human after all
With childish ways like blame and hate
when we feel small.
Brothers, Sisters, hang on in there, while empires rise and fall
Not fighting over the last few crumbs, from the master's table fall.
chorus
As the airship of humanity rides the Chaos thermal wave,
tell me, can you see the future, are you brave.
While those of us in the gutter are looking at the stars
Who cannot see, the light in the sunlight, of Time's
sweet coup de etats
love light and peace to the world

AF are anarchist communists. As a way of contributing to the demo on saturday, some AFers helped with FNB - a separate and pre-existing sheffield group. Because of a general politcal openness, AF, FNB and some NHS-defence material were all on the stall.
We look at it this way: we could stand about knocking out prop on its own, or we could chat to people and offer them something. There is something inherently political in the fact that we can provide food for over a hundred people for about 69p (for some spice) and £5 of petrol, but its not the main point that the AFers helping with FNB are trying to make. Its a useful way of contributing, and a good way in to struggles which you are not immiediately a part of.
FNB groups in general -
like a lot of american lifestyle anarchist things, FNB has gone to its most extreme in eastern europe - where people literally starve and providing food for the homeless is illegal, and warrants a kicking from the cops or murder from nazi gangs. Seriously. In the US, FNB has lead to full scale riots and is seen as a serious threat by the police. FNB isn't as ridiculously hippy as it would seem. This doesn't have any direct relavance to sheffield, but i'm happy for people to use the FNB banner if its seen as supporting the groups that get a lot of stick in russia and US.
Vegetarian food
In all honesty, the main reason why it the food would look weird is cos its beinjg prepared for over 10 people; all food prepared on that scale looks a bit like an industrial slurry, i've cooked for enough big groups to know that. Doesn't matter if if its meat or not.
Oh and as for looking for vegetarian hypocrisy (leather shoes and that) we aren't actually all vegetarians so you can't catch us out ha ha. I'd be happy for us to cook meat but: you can't get meat for free; its harder to prepare; if you do buy it, its your most expensive ingredient by far; people are very very picky with meat so less likely to take food; and finally, yes vegetarian exist, as well as kosher and halal and god knows what else crazy food beliefs. I might not agree with any of them, but its easy to see the lowest common denminator is no meat. Also, a mouldy spud might make you a bit peakish - badly cooked meat can kill you. Always a concern that, not killing people.
....finally
pal i haven't read your website - syndicalist - but if you are interested in syndicalism, get in touch. There are the makings of a IWW group in sheffield now. We are a lot happier getting stuck into that sort of thing than giving food to trots on a saturday (not that the ESOL demo wasn't class struggle).
get in touch with us here comrade:

Re Vegetarianism and Food Not Bombs
28.04.2007 20:56
For me the dual functions of Food Not Bombs are to feed those who may be in need and to make people question the capitalist system in which survival relies on money (and in which so much is needlessly wasted).

Just to mention ....

Yer,
I think it be useful if FnB and AFED develop out of North American lifestylism, developing Anarcho - Syndicalism is more like it.

Nazi attack against active band in Rostov-na-Donu
Late in the evening of Friday 27th of April, around 11:30 PM, Nazis attacked
punk hardcore group "2shots" in Rostov-na-Donu when they were leaving their
training base.
Basist of the group suffered most, he got 8 stab wounds but is alive and
recovering, although he lost much blood, had his lung punctured and he had
to be operated. Attack was well planned, Nazis were masked and outnumbered
band 12-15 to 4.
Group was propably targeted for participating to Food Not Bombs in
Rostov-na-Donu, and for participating to an anti-fascist concert 13th of
November, organised by local human rights organisation, in first anniversary
of murder of anarchist, anti-fascist and musician Timur Kacharava from St.
Petersburg.
Food Not Bombs is usual target of fascists in various Russian cities - after
murder of Timur Kacharava, there has been a number of attacks against Food
Not Bombs in St. Petersburg. 14th of January 2007 FNB activist Ivan Elin
suffered 20 stab wounds when returning home from action but he is
recovering. St. Petersburg police announced that 15-20th of April they
arrested a nazi terrorist group accused of a number of planned and realized
bomb attacks and stabbings, including a plan to bomb anti-fascist movie
festival, and explosion in Vladimirskaya square 4th of February, which was
apparently targeted against Food Not Bombs.
