nuclear weapons and "the theatre of war"

dreamspirit | 17.04.2007 07:36 | Analysis | Social Struggles | Sheffield

no one is exempt according to simon

a friend of mine named simon made the following point on saturday afternoon as i was preparing to make my way to sheffield arena to hear mr dylan the author of "masters of war"..... some weeks ago after being canvassed for his signature in support of opposition to the uk governments purchase of a new trident system, simon stated that he in fact was a supporter of nuclear weapons as in his opinion the nuclear strike option kept all world leaders in the "theatre of war" meaning that they would not escape the terrible consequences of the fallout....simon went onto say that in the past the upper middle classes commanding the working class in the ranks could sit cosily in london ie douglas haigh and co sending the working classes masses to their eventual slaughter and remain unaffected where as with the presence of nuclear warheads no world leader would risk making the first strike as they would face immediate retaliation ......nuclear weapons keep world leaders on the front line was simon's point.
what do you think about this idea.

Nah.

Nearly two hundred wars have been fought around the world since the atom bombs were dropped and the politicians sit in their offices and send ordinary people out to die.

Also don't forget about the other arguements against nuclear weapons, such as the pollution caused by manufacturing such weapons and transporting waste leaves areas contaminated. Areas in Berkshire are severly contaminated to the point where cancers and illnesses affecting the nervous system are high, and children are more likely to be born with physical and learning disabilities.

What?

That's hardly true! The United States dropped the bomb at the first chance it had. OK so Japan couldn't retaliate with a counter attack but doesn't the scenario of the Second World War, particularly the war in the Pacific, remind you of Israel and the surrounding Arabs? Just because the Arabs don't have the bomb do you think this would prevent Israel from using it if they started losing a future war?

Furthermore, the spiralling costs of the nuclear arms race is draining the resources out of the domestic economy.
And just witness the consequences of the arms race of the Cold War. Thousands of nuclear warheads left unaccounted for in Russia. Does the Black Market ring any bells?

And what 'theatre of war'? Is it the case that the large nations of the world are sitting behind their desks itching to go to war with one another but feel restricted from doing so simply because the other side also has nukes? That doesn't sound too likely. It's just fear nowadays.

And if they are planning on another world war then we're all fucked really so time to start living it up while you still have the time because it's within our lifetimes that the resources of the earth will run dry.

Umm.

Let me die in my footsteps

Tony Blair has a nuclear bunker, a nuclear protection suit, a good chance of getting rescued afterwards, as do all the leaders who possess these weapons. Leaders are more likely to be psychopaths than the rest of us. Or as yer man once sang :

There's been rumors of war and wars that have been
The meaning of the life has been lost in the wind
And some people thinkin' that the end is close by
"Stead of learnin' to live they are learning to die.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.

I don't know if I'm smart but I think I can see
When someone is pullin' the wool over me
And if this war comes and death's all around
Let me die on this land 'fore I die underground.
Let me die in my footsteps
Before I go down under the ground.
