Save the Anglican Chapel Campaign – “Together we can restore the Chapel” Sheffield General Cemetery Trust is pleased to announce a partnership with Sheffield Music Services to restore and make use of the Anglican Chapel.
The plan involves making use of BOTH the Grade II listed Anglican Chapel AND the Grade II* listed unused Non Conformist Chapel in the centre of the cemetery to form the new home of Sheffield Music Service from 2008 onwards.
The plans being developed mean both chapels will be used by a wide range of the people in the day-time and evening, and still allow some opportunity for further community use at weekends and times when the Service is not using the buildings.
Sheffield General Cemetery Trustee Brian Holmshaw said “We have reached an advanced stage of negotiations with Sheffield Music Service who will need to re- house the Service shortly.
The Trust believes these plans offer a workable solution for the future of the building, and guarantee permanent public access to the building and the surrounding landscape”.
Sheffield General Cemetery Trust have been actively working with Allen Todd Architecture and have comprehensive plans tailored to this solution that take careful account of the heritage of the building and the site, while still allowing for maximum public access.
Allen Todd and ECUS Design Consultancy have produced detailed research to ensure any solution takes account of the site heritage, the community needs and the special qualities of the building.
These include a Feasibility Study, a Conservation Management Plan for the Anglican Chapel, and a Conservation Management Plan for the landscape.
In addition SGCT have both Heritage Lottery Fund and the Architectural Heritage Fund funding supporting the development of the scheme described.
Further significant funding will of course be required to see this project through. However the Trust has a track record of raising major funds for building restoration and is committed to raising the necessary funds.
