Climate Camp, Late Summer 2006

Climate Camp | 09.11.2005 16:17 | Ecology | Free Spaces | Globalisation | Sheffield

With the government failing and unable to take action on the greatest issue facing our planet, climate chaos, we have to create a grass roots solution

A huge camp is being organised to bring people together to:

* provide information on climate change and its causes
* take action against climate change
* share and live practical solutions
* network with other people campaigning on all the aspects of climate change

The camp will be in the North of England next summer, and organisation is starting noe. If you are concerned about crazy weather and want to start taking action - join us!

Everyone is invited to get involved and come to a public meeting 11am - 6pm 14th January at Bridge 5 Mill, 22a Beswick St, Manchester.

Accommodation is available if you contact us in advance. Please also contact us about any access, dietary or creche needs.

what kind of climate camp?

11.11.2005 02:30

was wondering what kind of climate camp is that? a pro kyoto, greenpeace friends of the earth, 'green' camp or what? who is calling for the meeting? and what group is making this happen?

Dissent Gathering first weekend of July 2006, London

12.11.2005 08:38

Some Earth First and PGA people are promoting the camp with the support of IndyMedia. Well, at least they are flying a kite to see if there is any response.

Usually Earth First have a camp around that time, but it has been poorly attended in recent years, and the moat people thought the PGA had liquidated itself in Europe after being swallowed up by the Dissent Network. Unfortunately, I think the general feeling is that these groups have failed to take over the Dissent network and are looking elsewhere. Good luck.

This may be a good thing for climate change, and should be good for Dissent too.

However, existing groups, organisations and political parties have been involved in Climate change for many years. Wouldn’t it be better to join in with these, and support existing camps and gatherings, like the Big Green Gathering?

On a very positive note. There is going to be a Dissent Gathering in early summer, probably the first weekend of July, in London. The object is to co-ordinate and unify forces within the anti-capitalist movement, and how best to support existing campaigns, such as environmental ones including climate change. There has been a strategic decision for Dissent to act as a unifying network, and not a divisive.

More about this late, but pencil it your diaries for the first weekend of July.

clarify

12.11.2005 22:40

ok, hang on a second. can you clarify? what do u mean that dissent swallowed up PGA? i think you dont understand the nature of networks. and dissent! swallowed pga in EUROPE no less! im sure you have the knowledge to say something as senseless as that! its incredible that armchair activists would come up with tripe like that and then offer it as fact. to sit there and say ef and pga tried to take over dissent! is just shit stirring bollox. people are in groups and networks as individuals. we put our time behind what we believe, so please, get some knowledge of what you are talking about, like become involved in something and then comment. i can assure you you will change your judgement of things, but interesting to see what your ids and impressions are like... where did you get them from? ok... perhaps and ngo... join the big green eh? join an 'existing campaign or political party'... what like greenpeace corporate responsability campaign, they are in with shell, bp, unilever, etc? or the research corps of FOe? or the salvation army! corporate ngos just use people, work with governement to do what multinationals want them to. in dissent of pga, you decide what you want to be part of and then have the responsability to make it happen. in these ngos you just follow their hidden agenda. what does foe offer the fight against climate change, a 3% reduction? a 4.5% reduction? if the UN's scientists require 60%-90% then what are the ngos playing at? selling polar bear toys and a clean concious. or you can march up and downjust like evry year, against what they see as the evil of all evils, the american president and e$$o. patronising to people.simplistic and dangerous.

see what foe thinks about governement and emissions. 'the big ask' . foe recommneds a conservative leader... on their front page  http://www.foe.org.uk foe asks you....

from the foe website:

-------------- http://www.foe.org.uk/campaigns/climate/news/tory_climate_challenge.html -------------------

'The Tory leadership contest is now in the hands of 300k Party members. Voting has started, and ends with the winner being announced in early December.

Climate change will be one of the key challenges for the new leader of the Opposition.

We invited both candidates to talk to us about their views on global warming.

Davis camp quiet as Cameron calls for action

David Cameron kindly agreed for us to join him on his campaign trail. Listen to the full interview (MP3) or read an edited transcript.

Mr Davis has not responded to our numerous requests for an interview. Our invitation remains open - any information he provides will be added.

In the meantime you can read about recent speeches made by Mr Davis on environmental challenges.

Which candidate do you think has the best policies for tackling climate change?

-----------------------------------------------

this is just sick. climate change is fallen in the hands of the stablishment. foe, the conservatives, the uk government and the big energy multinationals. ok perhpas it was always in the hands of the stablishment. once in the oxford luminaries, like mark forgive blair nuclear solution lynas, whose academinc analisys's gone one step up the stablishment as power is out of answers. the proposed answer/red herring is buy yourself out of trouble, and wear a fashionable made in china badge, a trustworthy pop star is selling it to you.

the problem thing remains; climate chaos is stil there, THEY are not going to risk their lifestyles to solve it, WE are not doing enough, being effective to fight, not 'it' but THEM, who created and benefit from the problem... or should i say 'us' ?.

tuffa, i dont know what drug or flavour of japanese tofu you are on, but you must be tripping. to say:

However, existing groups, organisations and political parties have been involved in Climate change for many years. Wouldn’t it be better to join in with these, and support existing camps and gatherings, like the Big Green Gathering?

and in the same breath offer some information on a dissent gathering of anti-capitalists is just fucking weird. i would shut up. there has not been any strategic decition, no decision on gatherings, 'unified',split or otherwise, stuff is being considered by everyone.

i recommend people to check the dissent website  http://www.dissent.org.uk for real information, but better still, go along the gatherings and support anti capitalism everyday, on your own or with a group, visit the pga web to find out what the thing is about  http://www.agp.org and if you wanna find out about radical positions against climate change, check the risingtide political statement ( from a network thats been doing oil and climate for a while - written in 2000 )  http://www.risingtide.nl/statement/statement_english.html - written in 2000. if you want to DO SOMETHING YOURSELF against the root causes of climate chaos, give risingtide a shout and i think they wil help u start your own thing - who knows perhpas there r people in your area already looking into it  http://www.risingtide.org.uk and for EF! who are going stronger than ever, check  http://earthfirst.org.uk/

so toffa, you can fool some people sometimes, but ....

Clarification

13.11.2005 17:50

Mainstream political parties are tools of the Neo-liberal ruling class, and are enmeshed in capitalism. Forget about them; they are irrelevant.

The Greens and the various Socialist parties, groupings and alliances around the world are relevant in the capitalist democratic space, in so far as they have the potential to effect change by a shift away from private capital and property. They should be supported.

Of course class forces will eventually surface here, and "revolutionary" change can be effected from below. These forces are effecting positive change around the world, for example, in Argentina and Venezuela.

There is nothing to say about the PGA in Britain - they don’t actually exist. Perhaps there are a few dozen people in Europe that thing they do exist, but that's just speculation on my part.

After, firstly defeating Neo-liberalism, capitalism can then easily be routed. It is only then that the climate change can be arrested.

They is one big problem though: there exists a very powerful ruling class who will fight to the end, to retain their privileges. They need to be defeated in war, in the Middle East and South America, and stripped of the wealth they have stolen. World financial crises - one that isn’t not dictated or engineered by the ruling class - should do the job. And that's pretty much on the cards, unless you either not bothered or are an ostrich.

13.11.2005 21:04

Tuffa, without halting climate change, there'll be no humans left on this planet to 'debate' with on Indymedia.

Earth First! summer gatherings have been well attended in recent years, with over 400 people sharing info and planning for actions and campaigns. This last year, an even healthier mix of people came along and got a lot out of it, from feedback received.

Default On Debt!

15.11.2005 09:17

Argentina was one of the first nations to take the Neoliberalist turn. It was not achieved piece-meal through "democratic persuasion", as in the UK and USA, but was imposed through brutal violence after a coup supported by the USA and the Argentinean upper classes. Neoiberalsm has devastated Argentina.

Argentina eventually defaulted on the interest payments on its debts to western banks, which sent the US and world's finance system into a tail-spin.

The IMF eventually supplied loans to pay the US and other western banks their extortionate interest, because that is now it's function: to support bad loans by western banks. In this way cash flows from the poor counties to subsidise the rich, and keep western banks liquid. In other words the IMF is a cash-cow for US and western banks on which they are now dependent. These banks can use the money to supply cheap loans to US corporations. If corporations like Enron cant repay these loans, they are written off. This is one way the US, its ruling class, with the help of the banks steals from poor countries, leaving their economies devastated. In the processes the working classes are further impoverished, and often the middle classes too, but the ruling elite are further enriched.

Their are many other mechanism that the west uses to steal from the poorer nations. Unfair trading rules are a case in point. Precipitating certain types of financial crisis are others.

It would only take developing countries to again default on their debts to set the US and world finance into an irreversible tailspin.

The debt restructuring of recent years and trumpeted at this years G8 was an necessary, but maybe not a sufficient, adjustment to support US and western banks in their theft. It was not about helping these countries, despite the words of Blair, the chair of the G8, which were the usual lies. The dept restructuring was about stabilising conditions for further theft.

Argentina could accelerate a revolution by immediate ceasing dept repayments to western banks. Workers could then take over financially bankrupt, but viable industries and businesses and exclude US and western capitalists.

This would probably precipitate an immediate collapse of the US and world finance system.
