Peter Mahy, the solicitor acting for Anthony Green, the young Sheffield man who was run over by a police car and seriously injured in an incident in 1999, today described newly released video footage of the incident as ‘horrific’. He called for the Independent Police Complaints Commission to revisit their decision last year not to re-investigate the case and for the Home Secretary to order an independent enquiry.
The video was finally released to Mr Green’s solicitors under the Data Protection Act, previous requests to access the footage having been refused. The video has never been seen by the public before and was not even viewed by the Magistrates when the police officer appeared in court on 10th March 2000.
Mr Mahy, a civil liberties specialist at Sheffield-based Howells, is concerned that the video has only been released now, over six years after the incident.
“ We have been acting for Mr Green in this case since 1999 and have known that video footage of the incident was in existence and yet it has taken over six years for this vital evidence to be released to the public.
“ The Magistrates never saw this video when the police officer appeared in court. DC Lawrence, the police officer involved, was fined a mere £250 and received five penalty points. He has not been disciplined in spite of our referring the matter to both the former Police Complaints Authority and the new Independent Police Complaints Commission.
“Now that this horrific video footage is in the public domain we believe that this whole case should be reviewed and the case re-opened. We call upon the Independent Police Complaints Commission to take a fresh look at the case and call upon the Home Secretary to order an independent enquiry. Given the video evidence, how can Mr Green or the public ever feel that justice has been done?”

So, sadly, where's the news. I mean, does precise and specific evidence like this EVER change anything. New Labour (New Reich) has carefully molded the UK police service into a frontline unit that will happily implement any of Blair's desires, no matter how racist, unlawful, or out and out murderous! UNDERSTAND THIS- if Blair were to order all muslim men, women and children to be rounded up tomorrow, British policemen and women would carry out this order without a moments thought!
In any society, police are either of the people, or of the state. What matters is NOT what any police force does day to day under normal circumstances, but what they are prepared to do, if so ordered by a completely evil scumbag like Blair!

suddenly new names are posting comments on most if not all indymedia news items, and at the same time we have some names who were equally regular commenters before...
realist? magoo? where are you now?
or had your persistent support of the current regime become too obviously paid (or mad) to usefully maintain any longer, and are your instructions now to veer too far in the opposite direction, messing with our heads with a different mix of perceptiveness and extremist analysis?

Like Jews in Nazi Germany, Muslims in the UK are subjected to a barrage of negative propaganda, every day in the media. Neighbours and family are compelled, by law to report any suspicious behaviour for which they can be jailed for three months without charge, and we are told, by Jack Straw, that British-born Muslims pose a threat to us all.
Blair said the holocaust began with a stone through a Jewish window... how about a missile through a mosque window? If I was a Muslim, I would be very worried.

Having been hounded by the police quite a bit lately, I actually think you're not giving enough credence to what "twilight" has to say. These coppers *do* follow even the most insidious of orders. They have stopped me from protesting, they have illegally detained me, they are arresting people for having picnics in parliament square, they have stopped people from expressing themselves, they have shot an innocent man in the head, in the head, in the head, in the head, in the head, in the head, in the head and in the shoulder.
They are much more obedient than many readers here seem to think.
Since the battle of the beanfield and the miner's striker and then the raves of the 90s, police are becoming much less a part of the community - and the politicians want it that way. By seperating the police force from the community, they have a much greater control over all of us.
It is illegal for a cop to refuse an order, to go on strike, or to try to start a union. A copper union would be a great thing, imho, as it would enable the cops to refuse to do certain tasks.
ian blair - go an arrest those kids having a picnic in parliament square
unionised cop - no way. they're just drinking tea and making banners.
yes, i think obedience is one of the greatest attributes required by someone who wants to join the force. If ordered to round up all muslims tomorrow, would they? I'm not quite sure about that, but there certainly is very little infrastructure in place for cops who would resist these orders. I think only the bravest of cops would have the courage to say "no" to even the most evil of orders.
i would love to hear more opinions on this. i think encouraging cops (and soldiers) to disobey illegal/immoral orders is a key factor in making the world a better, fairer place for all of us.
cheers,
