Nottingham Peace rally in response to the London bombings

On Saturday afternoon, scores of people gathered for a peace rally in Nottingham in response to the London bombings. The event in Market Square was arranged by the Nottingham Muslim Action Group.

Organisers said the aim of the rally was to remember the victims of the bombings and promote solidarity between people of all races and faiths. and of course, no-faiths. The event was backed by a range of other faith groups.

After two-minute silence, 56 white balloons were released to represent and remember those that died as a result of the London explosions.

A similar rally was held last weekend in Leicester.

Stop the War?

25.07.2005 15:01

What is a "Stop the War" banner doing at the demo against the London terrorists?
If you are insinuating that the Iraq War has anything to do with it you are wrong, the terrorists also bomb Egypt and France, who are opposed to the war and play no part in it.

The Innocent

25.07.2005 15:18

I have heard in defence of Islam that the 'killing of innocents is not allowed' within the guidelines. Does that mean if as part of western society we are 'guilty' in the eyes of some Muslims? I feel 'innocent' is used to suggest that some people deserve to die.

Every bombing is a terrorist bombing whether it is dropped from a plane by somebody in a uniform or left on a bus.

Vigil from fear?

26.07.2005 08:16

At the Stirling anti-G8 site there was a big discussion around whether the camp should make a statement about the London bombings. A lot of people wanted too but in the end nothing went out as there was a failure to reach consensus.

However the discussion was interesting. Some people felt that the urge to make a statement was done out of fear (at the time there was a rumour going round that the media were suggesting the bombings could have been the work of anti-G8 protestors). After all there are lots of bombs and far worse tragedies going off all the time elsewhere and usually nothing is done or said. Looking back I think those who suggested our motivation was fear were probably right. The camp was also surrounded by hundreds of riot cops at the time too.

So I suspect the motivation for this is probably fear too. Not the best of reasons but completely understandable nonetheless. Muslims in Britain are in a far more vulnerable position than those who protested against the G8.

The Guilty

26.07.2005 08:25

I agree with your comment about innocent and guilty but its not just muslims that use such language.

The idea of 'innocent' is common in all kinds of western media (propaganda) as in 'hundreds of innocent people have died'.

It's a completely bogus way of looking at the world.

Rather patronising

26.07.2005 08:57

Some would go so far as to say insulting to Muslims. Is it not possible that they wanted to express their disgust at the murder of innocent people simply because they find the murder of innocent people is disgusting?

Rise in racial attacks reported

26.07.2005 18:49

BBC News Tuesday, 26 July, 2005, 16:06 GMT 17:06 UK

Rise in racial attacks reported

Racial attacks in Nottinghamshire have nearly doubled since the London bombings, according to the latest figures from a charity. Victim Support said 70 incidents had been reported since 7 July, compared to around 40 in the same period last year.

In the city of Nottingham, 41 racially-motivated incidents had been reported, compared to 17 in 2004.

Staff from the charity are urging people to report all crimes, however apparently minor.

Ian Firth from Victim Support said: "The unfortunate thing is that many people only report a situation when it becomes a crisis.

"People often suffer many incidents of racial harassment before seeking help - the average is 39.

"We encourage people to go to the police sooner so they can get the help and support they deserve."

Peace rally particulars

26.07.2005 21:14

A multi-faith peace rally in response to the London Bombings. Great, excellent. Can't fault it.
Well................almost can't.

Vigil from fear says: "After all there are lots of bombs and far worse tragedies going off all the time elsewhere and usually nothing is done or said".
Have to agree with that.
Can someone point out to me(because I am afraid that I must've missed them), the Multi-faith peace rallies recently held in relation to the neglect in Niger, the devastating death toll in Darfur, the atrocities in Afghanistan, killings in Kurdistan, crisis in Colombia, brutality in Burma, terror in Tibet, etc, etc, etc??

Please lets have Peace rallies, by all means, when needed, which is sadly EVERYDAY and NOT JUST : "Not in ME,ME,ME, my backyard".

"We mourn deaths in ALL nations"

Peaceful Pete
