Technical Problems

IMC | 07.04.2005 12:44 | Indymedia | Cambridge | Leeds Bradford | Liverpool | London | Manchester | Oxford | Scotland | Sheffield | South Coast | West Country

Sorry for the downtime, the motherboard failed in the publishing server, it's now been replaced.

Soon the site will be moved to a new server which should make things work better and should allow ftp uploads for large files to be set up.

Also Birmingham IMC (list) and Nottinghamshire IMC (list) are due to launch soon... watch this space...

OBSERVATION ON TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES

12.04.2005 06:02

It appears that the technical difficulties only started occurring after certain articles were posted on the website - though true - they might be very embarrassing to organizations closely linked to the government.

search switched to google

12.04.2005 15:05

for an alternative to google (in fact using google's search engine but 'scraping off' all their info they keep on you, ads, etc, is:
 http://www.scroogle.org/cgi-bin/scraper.htm

for what's bad about google, try
 http://www.google-watch.org/

perhaps more appropriate for IMC to not link to google, from alternative and security perspectives.

Oh, and PS, is IMC .uk hosted in Britain or elsewhere, by a friendly or commercial host? The reason I ask is because of that legislation which allowed the state to ask ISPs in the UK to fit a 'black box' so they can get everyone's IP addresses, that are writing here, and hitting the button below! Would be good to have an answer - posts like this obviously OK, but ones about actions etc perhaps not...

our server is roasted

12.04.2005 15:35

I'm not quite sure what the first comment ("government organizations") means...just to be clear, the imc-uk publish server is currently in very bad shape, it simply can't cope with the load being imposed on it (it hosts multiple indymedia sites from all over the world and sees a lot of traffic). We've known for quite a long time that it would start failing sooner or later, which is why we have been running an appeal for funds to buy a new server for a long time.

Thanks to all who have contributed to the server fund, you will be seeing the results of your donation very shortly. Indymedia techs are in the process of setting up a new server right now to fix all of these technical problems we have been having.

The server funding appeal is still on, if you would like to donate please take a look at the server appeal page at  http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2004/11/300412.html

To the second comment: the publish server is not hosted in the UK. The questions you've got on anonymity are good ones, though, if you are interested protecting your privacy online, you could try using Tor:  http://tor.eff.org

scroogle

12.04.2005 17:41

Sorry, I missed replying to the part about Scroogle: I don't know anything about Scroogle but have passed your suggestion along to the tech who set up the Google search.

Thanks for your suggestion. If you want to get involved in Indymedia UK tech, you can do that easily by subscribing to  http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/imc-uk-tech

Google Watch Watch

12.04.2005 17:52

Google Watch has been ripped apart a few times on Slashdot... also there is:  http://www.google-watch-watch.org/

But, sure Google shouldn't be trusted...

Using Google for the search is just a temp measure till the new indy server is ready to go live...

If peple are concerned about privacy then I suggest:

1. Use Tor, it's an anonomising proxy  http://tor.eff.org/

2. Use encrypted connections as much as possible

3. Reject cookies from all sites apart from ones where they are unavoidable

bristol IMC

17.04.2005 21:48

this thing about articles not going up or blank pages has been happening down our way too.

As far as I know there's no hardware link between the sites, is there?

rhedize

nice try

18.04.2005 12:00

nice try rhedize but the tech issue is pretty simple and being worked on

Re Bristol + UK

18.04.2005 12:04

No link between site issues.

Bristol have been using different code for comments, instituting a new system which has caused some bugs.

UK site has had a long running bug that sometimes produces 404 pages (eg post seems to not exist) - people are trying to deal with it, and a new server will be up soon which should sort this issue as well as making media uploads much much faster

Its the Lizards again!

24.04.2005 08:08

Damn their shady illuminati machinations!

David Icke

yes but don't worry they are Left wing Lizards

25.04.2005 05:20

not to worry jeremy the lizards all come from respectable middle class family's had a very good education (on us).
Bought nice cheap houses in previosly working class areas and are basically just as radically chic as the next err
Lizard. They are some what gullible and often quote boring old (communist) farts who were paid by Messers Red Sheild to write loads of old bollox about phoney revolutions .. yes the world through the eyes of the over privledged is a bit of a downer and D. Icke is undoubtedly a muck spreader of disinformation, but it might take more than a middle class twat to sus out what exactly he is dissing cos it's true and well I'll leave it to....

Media Mente

er:Its the Lizards again

26.04.2005 05:31

Did any of the hidden articles actually mention David Icke? The only ones I saw were about questioning the details of the 9/11 event at the World Trade Center.
